Markus Rodriquez and Theresa Freeman by Ericha Hagenbuch Collegian Staff Last weekend, Penn State- Bchrcnd celebrated its 1995 Parents and Families Homecoming Weekend. Over 20 activities were planned for the celebration. Homecoming events started on Friday at 4 p.m. with the women's varsity soccer game. The Lady Lions made a clean sweep against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, ending with a score of 15-0 to set the tone for the "Chariot Races" which began at 7:30 p.m. "They were a good time," commented Dave Miller, a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. "Our Fraternity made the chariot out of a wheelchair and pulled it with two rods that we attached to the sides." "There was one chariot for every fraternity and sorority," said Dr. Chris Reber, Dean of Student Affairs. "There were literally hundreds of students standing on the intramural field supporting the racers.” There was an estimated 300 students in attendance at the Police and Safety Report October 11: The residents of a room in Porcupine Hall reported someone had entered their room and vandalized it. October 12: A student reported that when she left Lawrence Hall she heard someone say in a strange voice that she had better walk faster or that he was going to get her. The student did not look back and there was no further contact October 13: Police and Safety officers discovered a vehicle in S lot with both passenger side tires flat. Further investigations showed the flat tires were the result of the vehicle striking items in the grass along the lot. October 14: A student was referred to the Student Judicial system after he was found on the roof of the Reed Building by Police and Safety officers. October 15: A student was transported to the hospital by Brookside paramedics after he injured his ankle at the athletic fields. October 16: A member of the housekeeping staff reported finding the sanitary napkin machine in the women’s locker room of Erie Hall broken into. October 16: A resident of Cooper Road reported his dog missing. It is an orange and white Siberian Husky named, “Wolf.” If anyone has seen this dog, please contact Police and Safety. October 16: The housekeeping staff in Erie Hall reported someone had damaged one of the fire extinguisher stations and had taken a dry chemical extinguisher from another station in the building. ongratulations Theresa! 1995 PSB Homecoming Queen Love, Your Sisters of OOA races. Chariot races were organized by the Intrafraternity and Panhellenic Councils. After the races, crowds gathered for a bonfire behind the Behrend Science Building to listen to "The Dirges", eat roasted hot dogs, s'mores, and ice cream provided by Lion Ambassadors. "The Dirges' is one of Erie’s favorite club bands," said Alison Ernandez, Student Activities Program Coordinator. "They sounded kind of like Rusted Root." Before the show, the band made a surprise visit to Dobbins dining hall, had dinner and handed out free t-shirts. "By the time they started their set at 8 p.m., the area around the bonfire was packed," said Ernandez. The band took a break at 8:40 p.m. for the Homecoming King and Queen crowning ceremony. When Chris Rizzo, Director of Student Activities, announced the new king, Marcus Rodriquez, and queen, Theresa Freeman, the crowd reacted with excitement "Everyone was really excited- I actually had to stop talking after I announced the names of Theresa Freeman and Markus Rodriquez because the cheering was so loud," said Rizzo. "It was so cool," said Ernandez. "Sara Mechiore, the previous queen came down to crown the new queen, we had a lot of fun." Homecoming was a success despite the rainy weather. and Organization Alumni held a breakfast Saturday morning in Dobbins Gazebo. The breakfast was held to give parents and alumni the opportunity to see what clubs and organizations are on campus. There were three alumni sporting events scheduled for Saturday-soccer, volleyball, and softball. "Two alumni teams played the soccer game, out on the field but the volleyball game was against the varsity volleyball team," said Herb Lauffer, athletic director. "Unfortunately, the softball game had to be cancelled do to inclement weather," said Lauffer. There was a good turnout but there was no opportunity to play." AH carnival activities organized by Student Activities were free, including "Gladiator Joust," "Trampoline Thing!" and temporary tattoos. "Everyone loved the jousting," said Emandez. "The jousters really got into it, and eventually people were gathered around the set cheering and shouting." Rizzo gave the "Trampoline Thing!" a whirl. "It was the danger of a trampoline with the safety of a bungee cord," said Rizzo. Some groups had booths in the Commons to raise money and promote their club or organization. "There was a pie throw, an ice cream stand and a booth where a group was mixing up mocktails," said Emandez. A Murder Mystery Dinner was held Saturday evening in Dobbins Gazebo. "We had originaly planned for the dinner to take Thursday, October 19,1995 place in the Wintergreen Cafe," said Ed Mulfinger, Director of Food and Housing Services, "but when the reservations went up over the 2SO mark, we knew that we would only have enough space in the Gazebo." The evening concluded with comedy by the "Capitol's resident satirical group," Gross National Product performing in the Reed Commons. "The attendance was great and the skits were very funny," said Rizzo. "There were many skits, one after the other, dealing with social and political issues." Rizzo continued, "There was a debate between one actor impersonating Bob Dole and one portraying President Clinton, then there were impersonations of Janet Reno, Colon Powell, Newt Gingrich, and of course, Phil Donahue.
