Page 6 It's a doggy, dog world The Shaggy Dog, located on West Eighth Street, offers a late night college atmosphere. by Eddie Edwards and Colette Rethage Collegian Staff If you're into the college bar scene then, you might want to check out the Shaggy Dog. Located on West Eighth Street in downtown, the Shaggy Dog caters to a more relaxed, easygoing college crowd. It has been around for seventeen years, and is presently owned by Dick Armour. There are specials every night of the week from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m., but the bar's prime hours are from 11:30 p.m. on. It's a great bar to go to for after hours, the best nights being Monday, Somethin Kravitz's "Circus" makes the rain that makes the flowers by Ryan Bogart Collegian Staff Lenny Kravitz's new CD is very different than what 1 am used to reviewing. Yet he is a great musician and I expected nothing less than a great disk. I asked for it, and i got it Although some songs on “Circus” could be defined as cheese, the good song's make up for them. But even my opinion of his cheese is good compared to the rest of the garbage on the market today. The feelings that he puts into his songs are like no other group or single musician today. “Rock and roll is dead” is the new hit on the radio and MTV. The song combines good lyrics with an upbeat tempo that is sure to get even the shy kid off of the couch and dancing. The title could be a little misleading, if I STILL THINK WE HERE..TAKE A HANDKERCHIEF, SHOULD HAVE PARACHUTES TIE A STRIN6 AT EACH -y — — CORNER, AND YOU HAVE A / Oa PARACHUTE...TRY IT.. /Oar “~S^ o </) Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. But there's more to do at The Dog than just drink. There are two pool tables, a dart board, pinball games, and video games for additional entertainment. There is also a DJ every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night playing a wide variety of music by request As of yet, the Shaggy Dog's kitchen is still closed for renovations, but will open in the next few months. The menu will feature typical bar foods. Greg Stickle, bartender at the Dog, said, "If you’re looking for a late night college atmosphere, stop by The Dog and see Stick." new: you don’t give it a chance and listen to the rest of the song. I think that this song is Kravitz’s way of poking fun at all of the hype that goes along with being a rock musician. “You think you’re on top of the world, but you it’s really over” is the opening line. “You can’t even sing or play an instrument, so you just scream instead,” could mean that he is sick of hearing all the cheesy rock and roll bands that arc making a living off of other people’s lyrics and styles. “You’re living for an image” is the perfect quote, and even back up my theory even more that this song is about an average band looking to “Make it Big.” As I was listening to the CD for the first time, I noticed something in his guitar riffs. That they reminded me of a Led Zeppelin style that is as original PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE 60NET0 JUMP SCHOOL Entertainment as sliced bread. Now Lenny is creating his own version of this great style, which I don’t mind, I even welcome. In “Beyond the 7th Sky,” he utilizes this style as well as a slow pace grunge that Zeppelin is so recognized for. If you are looking for the slower pace song, then listen to “God is Love.” I didn’t realize that Lenny was a devoted Christian, but this song supports this idea to the fullest. Wow, he even is somewhat of a poet; “He makes the rain that makes the flowers.” If you are looking for a groovy, but mello tune, turn it to number eight and jam away. The 70’s brought the “wah wah” peddle in the guitars and made it a permanent fixture in the decade’s music, Kravitz is reviving the funky, psychedelic instrument in the tune called “Thin Ice.” If you don’t know what a “wah wah” is. It seems that the funky, groovy words that I use to describe Kravitz, he uses to describe himself and in his lyrics. “Tunnel Vision” with the line that is repeated several times throughout the song, “Make it Funky Now,” only adds to the “Funidness” of the tune. There are plenty of odd pictures of him in the jacket. It seems that his hip style of clothing, jewelry, and hair style have been blown out of proportion in this disk. However, he isn’t wearing many clothes in the pictures. Out of ten, this disj is a nine.
