* p e s Thursday, September 21,1995 New resources for MCC Steven R Landon Collegian Staff The Multi-Cultural Council (MCC) unveiled its new Resource Center on September 5. The Center is located in the former Student Government Association Suite in the Reed Union Building. The "New Beginning" gave students an opportunity to get a peak at what the center will be all about A grand opening will be announced in the near future when most of the planned resources are in place. To take a peak before the grand opening, an open house is planned for October 4th at 6:30 p.m. MCC member organizations have offices in the center to make contacting them easier for all students. Regular meetings for member organizations are also Shields says farewell Teryl Shields, Assistant Director of Student Activities, bids farewell to Behrend after more than two and a half years of service. Shields has accepted a position at Penn State Altoona as a counselor/advisor to returning adult students. “It’s been a wonderful experience,” said Shields of her time at Behrend. Shields began her career at Behrend after graduate school “This position was my first out of graduate school,” Shields said. “I don’t know where I'll ever find such a fulfilling position.” According to Shields, her position in Altoona is “a little bit of everything.” Some of her responsibilities will include admissions, recruiting of adult students and career development software. Shields hopes to increase adult enrollment at Altoona. Shields last day is Friday, September 22 and will start work on Monday in Altoona. “I’ve had a wonderful time hoe,” said Shields concerning Behrend. “And I’ll miss everyone." News Briefs Bear Naked SGA Report Day of Caring Collegian held in the center. The Resource Center is not just for minority students. "The Multi-Cultural Resource Center is an asset and a resource to everyone on campus," says Derrice Ward, vice-president of MCC. Ward also emphasizes the Center as a valuable resource tool on campus. The center has and will continue to add information about many other cultures as well as diversity issues. Among the materials presently in the center are language tapes, minority periodicals and scholarship information. Plans to expand the assets of the center are already in the making. According to Lourdes Tirado, president of MCC, an assessment team has been formed to evaluate and improve the center's assets. That team will be working closely with Ken Miller and the Residence Life staff. by Danielle M. Seating is available By Sean Siekkinen Collegian Staff The Student Government Association will hold Freshman and Resident Senator elections Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lobby of the'Otto fiehrend Science Building. Voting also took place Wednesday afternoon outside of the Reed Building. Four freshmen and five resident students are running for a total of six SGA seats. Two Freshman Senators and six Resident Senators currently sit on SGA. Only four of the Resident Senator positions are up for election. The Resident Senator candidate elected with the fewest votes will remain in office only until the end of the semester unless SGA passes a constitutional amendment officially recognizing the sixth and final seat Since only six commuters are running for the eight available Commuter Senator seats, elections will not be held for that post However, write-in ballots will be accepted. Charlotte; Lafer, a psychology major who is also a Freshman Senator candidate, says she is running for office so that she will have the opportunity to get important things accomplished. "In high school, every time I or somebody I knew wanted something done, it never happened. I wasn't involved in student government, of course. Now I would like to change that" Resident Senator candidate Doreen Foutz is running on a platform of housing reform. She says she would like to see dorm life better regulated. "I'm running because I want to have a voice at Behrend, and in what goes on," Foutz said. According to SGA Commuter Council President Steve Landon, SGA members will be tackling such issues as student parking, listribution of funds, and tehrend's implementation of revenues from the new student activity fee in upcoming months. In last year's Presidential election, 262 students went to the polls. Woycheck said, "We hope to be surprised," on the subject of this year's voter turnout. All voters will be asked to present their student ID card. Woycheck encourages all candidates not gaining election to the Senate, and any other students interested in student government to participate in SGA through the various activities and committees that will be formed throughout year.
