The central theme of the program was "No Means No." The "Take Back the Night" march began at Perry Square and ended at The Scrounge of Gannon University. "Take Back the Night" commemerates bringing awareness to sexual assault and domestic violence victims. This type of march started in England 1977, when there was a women only protest, intentionally held after dark. Men were involved in this year's activities. The Brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma from Behrend, said, "We are here to stand up for the rights for women Amphibian research on French BEHREND--Wading into the icy waters of French Creek may not be on many people's minds this time of year, but biologists at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College have other ideas. Dr. Don McKinstry, associate professor of biology at Penn State-Behrend, is looking forward to slipping down French Creek's banks this April, hoping that 1995's mild winter weather pattern will continue through the warmer months. Dr. McKinstry, his colleague Dr. Harry Cunningham Jr., also an associate professor at the College, and half-dozen students will soon pick up where they left off research from last year when spring flooding combined with a new sampling technique to provide less-than-ideal conditions. ................................. The research involves a baseline inventory of amphibian and reptile populations at various spots along the creek, which is listed as "globally significant" by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The biologists' exploration is made possible this year through an $B,OOO grant from the Wild Resource Conservation Fund (WRCF). Last year's research was also funded by the WRCF, but a number of factors were involved that led to a somewhat disappointing results, Dr. '"~'~' > Y ::~ April 20: A complaint of theft is under investigation after a staff member reported that someone had taken a pager he left in a restroom in the Library on April 10. As the people gathered around Perry Square, flashlights, candles, signs and fliers were passed out. Linda Bebko Jones, a state representative from Erie, stated that "the self-destructive path that society takes troubles legislature's goal, which is to eliminate violence. Jacquie Wade, one of the committee members and coordinator of Residence Life and Human Relations Programs stated, "There is a tremendous amount of unity and the importance of this prepares us for the march." Along the way the march stopped and victims gave McKinstry believes. The biologists tried a new sampling method that involved placing flat boards instead of traps along the creek to mimic natural cover and reduce animal mortality. The boards may not have been as inviting as hoped and flooding complicated the effort as it may have wiped-the - slate-clean from underneath. The final inventory was moderate, 40 specimens, with 17 charted species out of a potential 25 to 30. The group found lots of green frogs, American toads, and dusky, two-lined and red backed salamanders among some other common species. "Our general impression is that things are not as abundant as they once were," Dr. McKinstry says. "It could also mean that the area does not have a reptile and amphibian diversity to match that of the plant life." Dr. McKinstry had hoped to come across something considered rare but possible such as the spotted turtle, bog turtle or swamp rattler (massasauga). French Creek -- which flows south through Erie County from branches near Wattsburg, Cony and Findley Lake -- may have once experienced a reversal of water flow as glaciers receded e Re Thursday, April 27, 1995 testimony about their assaults. Victims ranged in age and were noted as Survivors. The march held is to promote awareness of violence and to attempt to prevent it and to let people know "No means Not" Fact! Every year, an estimated two to four million women of all races and classes are battered by a spouse or intimate partner in the United States. Fact! Every 15 seconds a woman is battered. According to Diana Ziemniak, co-president of the National Organization of Women, "April is sexual assault awareness month. Across the nation, many programs are planned in an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence." Ziemniak also added that "it is a human issue that affects everyone." Creek's banks during the ice age, and this may account for some of its biological uniqueness, Dr. McKinstry says. This year the researchers will attempt to establish new sites along French Creek from which to sample. Instead of the board method, they will use a variety of collecting techniques, carefully combing and recombing each possible habitat, returning periodically through November. However, finding new sites for the research is much harder than it once was, a factor that increasingly inhibits accurate inventory profiles. "People are much more hesitant than they once were to let you on private land," he says. "They are afraid we will find something endangered that will designate part of their property as protected. So, today, we are often limited to public lands and this is not always a good indication of what is really out there." Despite potential drawbacks, the students who join McKinstry and Cunningham on their expeditions gain invaluable field experience to add to their classroom knowledge. Dr. McKinstry expects several students who have participated in this two-year project to write papers on the experience and possible publish. ort
