Page 10 Golf star named ATW by Jill Pauch Collegian Staff Todd McLaughlan, a management major senior, is this week's Housing and Food Service's Athlete of the Week. McLaughlan attended Tidioute High School and has been playing golf for nine years. McLaughlan credits his father with inciting his interest in the sport. When asked why he felt he was chosen as the ATW, McLaughlan responded, "Because I helped my team win a match. I really played well and came through for the team." Coach Herb Lauffer responded to McLaughlan's being chosen ATW, "He played in two tournaments. He was a runner-up at Washington and Jefferson and shot an 81. In the tournament with Thiel, Todd was a medalist with a round of 77. He's the number two player on our team." McLaughlan's individual and team goals for this season were accomplished, but yet unfulfilled, "As a team my goal was to win a tournament, which we accomplished," said McLaughlan. "And individually to win a tournament, which I did. But I'd like to win a bigger tournament." Concerning his best Behrend finishes dismal season by Nick Zulovich Assistant Sports Editor The Behrend Men's tennis team finished a disappointing season at the Marketplace Invitational Tournament last weekend. The team finished with a record of 3- 10. First year coach Chuck Keenan did not dwell on the fact of the team's losing record. "I can't be disappointed, because the effort was definitely there. All of the guys put in good effort at every match," stated Coach Keenan. Keenan felt that the high level of competition and the inexperience of his players performance this year, McLaughlan said," It would have to be my 77 at Thiel." Coach Lauffer commented on McLaughlan's performance this year, "What brings him to this point is that he has mastered, as a person, and as a player. By experiencing these successes, his confidence has risen. He really played a factor in our winning, and we placed third out of nine at W and J." Jim Stall, a teammate of McLaughlan's, said of his performance, "He was shooting very well. He had a 77 and an 81, he just couldn't miss." Fellow teammate Adam Delsandro added, "From my experience playing with Todd, he's an excellent player and has been improving. His golf swing has improved, and he should only keep improving." "His performance at Thiel preceded the conditions, wet and muddy," said teammate Dave Koster, "I was really impressed that he over came them. He is a very consistent player." McLaughlan concluded by commenting on the golf program at Behrend, "I think it has grown and improved ever since Coach Lauffer took over, and it continues to get better. contributed to the team's losing record. "Making the transition from high school to college competition is very difficult. I had to play three freshmen through the year," explained Keenan. One of the bright spots on the team was senior Karl VanTassal. VanTassal was one of the few Behrend men to win a match at the Marketplace Tournament. "I won two out my three matches at Marketplace. Being the number one player, the competition was very tough. I had to earn every point in every match," explained VanTassal. Since this was VanTassal's last el Via?
