Letters to the Editor
Misrepresentation
As the Head of the Division
that sponsors the Feminist
Scholars Speakers Series, I
suppose I should be glad Dr.
Cindy Patton’s speech was
reported in the newspaper. As a
person who attended the lecture, I
am horrified to read a gross
distortion of Dr. Patton’s talk.

litigious. J. Henry states “Patton
believes, ’the media doesn’t have
a direct effect on the public,’
although the representation of
teens and AIDS is highly
aocepted by the readers.’’

challenging logic of this

paragraph, the fundamental point
of Dr. Patton’s lecture was how
the media categorizes teenagers
into certain groups and subtly
blames some teens (gay and of
color) while portraying another
group—white middle class
heterosexual teens as “victims” of
these other two “diseased”
segments of the population. Ido
hope that in the future the
“Collegian’s” reporters will make
a more serious attempt to
understand what they are
reporting!
