Hie Lady Lions continued their
strive to reach the .500 mark as
they took on Bethany College
last night
A last second layup by Behrend
center Marlesse Schlott gave the
Lady Lions a thrilling 61-60
victory.
“I didn’t win the game tonight,
it was a total team effort I just
made the last shot,” stated
Schlott.
Schlott led all scorers with 20
points along with 8 rebounds
Becky Reed added 18 points, 14
of these were in the first half.
Liz Broughton led Bethany
with 18 before fouling out with
three minutes left in the game.
Stephanie Cunningham added 12
points and 11 rebounds for
Bethany.
Head coach Roz Fornari was
very pleased with the team’s
victory.
“Beating Bethany is a real
quality win. Bethany was ranked
in this ECAC region,” explained
Fornari.
Clinton strikes out, last straw for
Strawberry, and Pens stay faithful
Now that the National Guard,
the 82nd airborne unit, and Boy
Scout Troop 411 have been
brought in; now that the game
has called off the bench a
government that is divided; now
that NBA has taken over the
national pastime who (or what) is
going to help end a baseball
strike that could possibly wipe
out this season with only eight
days to go until the camps open?
After owners and players
missed their second deadline to
settle, Clinton and the White
House pushed for an end to the
strike through legislation by
throwing the ball Congress's
way. After the first inning, it
seems that the Republican - held
Congress will more than likely
give heavy resisience to the bill.
Said Newt Gingrich, House
Speaker, on possible
congressional intervention, “I’m
not sure Congress is the right

national pastime ... I’d be very,
very cautious.” Three strikes and
you're out Bill.
What ever happens, I feel that
baseball has distanced itself so far
from the national eye that any
hope of continuing as a national
pastime has all but diminished.
In life, we hold our own
destiny. Darryl Strawberry held
his and let go. His short 29 -
game career with the San
Francisco Giants ended when he
tested positive for cocaine on
consecutive days last month. It
was the same Giants that gave
Strawberry a chance to come back
and once again a sports hero has
fallen. My advice to Strawberry,
take up golf - at least they play.
After the Pittsburgh Penguins
fast start last week, the Pens have
not let me down. They continued
their winning streak with a 7-3
shalacking of the Florida
Panthers on Tuesday. The

shots from three point land. The
Lady Lions also used a full court
press to give them 35-27
halftime lead.
Fornari explained how this
game was the fourth one point
decision the Lady Lions were
involved in.
“We’re 2-2 in one point games.
It’s a good experince for the
younger players on the team.”
On Monday, the Lady Lions
were scheduled to take on Theil
College at Erie Hall, but due to
the bad weather, the game was
been postponed until Feb. 20.
Last Saturday, Fornari and the
Lady Lions won a hard fought
road victory at Grove City, 59-
58.
"ageless wonder" Joe Mullen
celebrated his 1,000 career point
in the game. The Tomas
Sandstrom-John Cullen-Joe
Mullen line finished the game
with 10 points - the team is even
doing this without Mario
Lemiuex and Tom Barrasso. The
bench is thinner yet without top
right wingers Luc Robitaille and
Kevin Stevens who are both out
as well. Robitaille is suspended
for a high-sticking incident
Stevens is out with a hairline
fracture of his left ankle. The
Pens have showed in the past that
they can play without Mhrio and
are showing it once again.
They’ll be there in the end as
well.

winning layup
Schlott led Behrend with 18
points and 8 rebounds. Emily
Marini and Melanie Banas also
scored in double figures with 10
points apiece.
Grove City, which fell to 3-16
for the season, was led by Jody
Swauger-Simms' 18 points...
Fornari felt Grove City was a
much better team than their
recad indicated.
“It was a really good win for
us. Grove City is an improving
team, whose players are now
starting to play as a unit,”
commented Fornari.
Behrend shot only 36 percent
from the field, but the Lady
Lions went to the free throw line
five times more than Grove City.
Behrend went to the free throw
line 25 times, while Grove City
had only four attempts.
Senior point guard Megan
Musante played the entire game
against Grove City. She stated
that she is comfortable with
being in a leadership role.
“I’U ask for a sub if I’m tired,
but otherwise when she (Coach
Fornari) needs me in the game
I’m there.”
Last Thursday, Behrend traveled
for another road game at Buffalo
State. Behrend came out on the
short end of this game, losing
76-75.

tonight, It was a total team
effort. I lust made the last
shot.”
- Marlesse Schlott
With no time left on the clock,
freshman Heather Norder made
only one of two free throws that
would sent the game into
overtime.
Nikki Schultz lead Behrend in
scoring with 14 points, while
Becky Reed and Norder added 13
and 12 points. Norder also lead
Behrend with 8 rebounds.
Buffalo State forward Amy
Gold lead all scorers with 27
points, and she added 10
rebounds. Amy Danner added 22
points for Buffalo State.
The Lady Lions biggest
problem was turning the ball
over against Buff State. Coach
Fornari stated Buff State did
nothing out of the ordinary
defensively.
They played a regular half
court defense. We had no entry
passes to the wing, and that’s
how we turned the bail over,”
explained Fomari.
