NCAA FOOTBALL OCTOBER 15, 1994 by Nick Zulovich Collegian Staff The Penn State-Behrend women’s volleyball team returned to its winning ways by cruising to a tournament championship in its own Lion Challenge held OcL 8. The Lady Lions did not lose a single match during the tournament. In round-robin play, they started by pummeling Lake Erie College 15-3 and 15- 1. Behrend continued with a 15- 7, 15-10 victory over Pitt- Bradford and a 15-1, 15-6 rout over Nazareth College to put Behrend in the championship game. In the championship game Behrend defeated Nazareth again 15-9 and 15-7 to capture the title. Molly Samuels and Angela Georg were rewarded for their excellent play by being named to the All-Tournament Team. Samuels recorded 19 kills and 11 digs in tournament play. She played the championship game with a sprained left ankle, which she hurt during round robin play. Georg had another consistent tournament registering 59 assists and 10 digs. Carl Campbell 111 Collegian Staff The Behrend women's tennis team concluded its season on Saturday with the Cardinal Invite at Rochester. In doubles Shelly Pearson and Rhonda Dennison lost in the semifinals to RTT. Steph Nelson and Chris Hughes fell to Allegheny in the second round. Behrend advanced Steph Nelson, Shanna Cotti, Rhonda Dennison, and Holly Olarzuk to the second round before being eliminated. On Friday, Oct. 7, the team defeated Sl John Fischer to put its final record at 9-5. The women started off the season setting a Behrend record of six consecutive victories. This streak was broken by Frostburg State on SepL 23. Coach Chuck Keenan said, "They (Frostburg) were a solid team. They had a little more depth. They had a little more experience and that's where we ended up taking die fall.” The weekend was what Keenan considered the "biggest weekend of die season." It involved the Thursday, October 13,1994 11-15,8-15,15-8,10-15. Vollmer continued, "We’ve put the last three matches behind us. We were really nervous in those matches; we're much more relaxed now." Behrend faced difficulties at Buffalo State bn SepL 29. The rainy weather forced an inside match which Keenan said, "was like playing in a bubble." The courts were designed for a variety of other sports and had different lines on the floor for basketball, volleyball and tennis. Low-lighting did not help in Behrend's fifth loss of the season. Despite the losses late in the season, Keenan feds that the season went extremely wdL "These ladies hate to lone and we definitely took c our lumps... There were gutsy performances all the way down the line. Nobody ever gave up and I am extremely proud of d>dm players," he said. S >
