The Collegian Wednesday, February 7,1990 Lions end five-game losing streak 15-point win over visiting Elmira by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer Behrend defeated Elmira College of New York in 'The Pit', 79-64, to end the Lion's five game losing streak last Saturday. The game was delayed for about thirty minutes because the Soaring Eagles' bus broke down enroute to Erie Hall. Lion's junior forward Rick Demski was game high scorer with 22 points. Demski shot 10 of 11 from the field and added two free throws. Head Coach Doug Zimmerman stated that, "Offensively, we did what we were supposed to do, but sometimes we tried to do too much." Sophomore guard Jeff Cowan and senior guard David Gurska each had a trio of three pointers. Cowan finished with 15 points while Gurska netted 13. Demski led Behrend on the glass by pulling down nine rebounds. Tim Martin of Elmira made three triples while leading his team with sixteen points. From the free throw line, Behrend connected on thirteen out of seventeen shots while Elmira managed only eleven out of twenty-two free throws. The score was close in the beginning of the game when Behrend only led 18-14 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Then Demski scored the next 10 of 11 points for Behrend to take a 43-25 lead heading into the locker room. Freshman starting center Steve Cooper was in foul trouble early and didn't see much playing time in the first half. Cooper later fouled out with about nine minutes to go in the contest. The Lion's shot 52 percent from the field while the Soaring Eagles shot 39 percent Behrend's record is now 7-12 overall and 5-3 at home. Last Wednesday, Behrend was home against Houghton College (5-12), where the Lions were defeated by the Highlanders, 115- 102. Houghton had a 19 point lead at the half, 61-42. Michele Madison ended up with 24 points to lead Behrend's offense. Michele Beisler also hit double figures with 11 markers. Both Madison and Lisa Doienkamp bagged a three pointer. "Wie played smart ball," said freshman Lori Nadolny. Sports Behrend cut Houghton's lead to eight points at 102-94 with 2:04 remaining in the game. The free throw shooting of the Highlanders put the game out of the Lion's reach. Behrend had a 38-28 rebound margin against the Highlanders. Houghton made an impressive 31 out of 37 free throws while the Lions shot 11 from 14 at the line. Houghton shot 63 percent from the field and Behrend shot 51 percent. Houghton's senior guard Tom Kirschner was game high scorer with 41 points. Kirschner was 10 of 14 from the field and 18 of 22 from the charity stripe. Sophomore forward Dave Binkowski made 12 of 13 shots from the floor and was 7 of 7 from the free throw line to add 35 points for the Highlanders. Demski was Behrend's high scorcr, making 13 of 22 shots from the field for 28 points. Demski also owned the boards, ripping down 14 rebounds, including 10 off of the offensive glass. The Lady Lions built a 36-23 lead ter halftime and eventually won the game for the home crowd. Doienkamp was the only Lady Uon to hit from beyond tte three-point arc. The future looks bright for Behrend according to Nadolny. hi the five games remaining, she says the team has the potential to win them all. The team record is 8-12, and the lady cagers have a good chance of improving upon last year's 9-16 finish. The lady hoopsters host Bethany tonight with tip-off at6pm.
