We feel more like saying., Have nothing to do with any, of them. Of the few, however, which may poissibiy be read without harm, if not with posi tive advantage, we would mention the celebrated work of Victor Hugo, entitled Les Miserable's, of which Ass ire jean, now before us, is the fifth and 'concluding volume. This work has been favorably noticed both by the Protestant press of France, and the religious journals of Great Brit ain and America. We cannot give it our unqual ified approbation, though we readily commend it as a superior and comparatively unexceptionable work of fiction. Its Character, Career, and Probahle Designs; Being an Attempt to Explain the Real Issues Involved in the Amer loan Contest. By 1. E. Cairnes, 1L.4 , Pro fessor of Jurisprudence and Political Economy in Queen's College, Galway ; and late Whately Professor of Political Economy in the Univer sity of Dublin. Professor Cairnes has given to America and the world a book of no ordinary merit. The subject of slavery is viewed mainly from an economic standpoint. It is treated practically and philosophically, and with a comprehensive ness of view in the highest degree creditable to the writer. Americans may not accept all the conclusions of this transatlantic work, but it will. meet in the main with the hearty approval of till true friends of freedom. It willgentrally be conceded that the author has shown that whatever other issues may be involved, slavery is really at the bottom of our civil 'difficulties: We commend to the earnest consideration of all, the question discussed by Professor Cairnes " Whether the Power which derives its strength from slavery, shall be set up with enlarged re sources and increased prestige, or be now once for all effectually hroken." The book is for sale by H. Miner, Fifth Street, Pittsburgh. Per the Presbyterian Banner Synod of Ohio. COLUMBUS, 0., Oot. 14, 1862 EDITOR OF THE BANNER:—AIong with the Narrative of the State of Religiou, I send you the following brief notes of what was dune by the Synod of Ohio, at its late meeting in Bucyrus, commencing on the 9th instant. ' In the absence of Rev. George L. Kalb, the Moderator, who has entered the army as a chaplain, Synod was opened with a sermon by Rev. J. M. Drake, from Isa. lii : 1. Rev. J. E. Alexander was elected Mod erator, and Rev. L. B. W. Shryock and J. C. Tidball , Clerks. The attendanee was smaller than usual, but the meeting was one of much pleasure and profit. The condition of the country and of the Church, in these perilous times, produced a tender and solemn interest, and gave di rectitin to the devotions, and, to some ex tent, to the doings of the body. The subject which awakened most feel ing was that of Systematic Benevolence, and the peculiar necessities of the Boards. Rev. Dr, J. C. Lowrie, of the Foreign Board, addressed the Synod on Friday evening, and was followed by various members or Synod in earnest appeals. A strong im pression was made, and the following Paper was adopted : "The Synod has heard with deep inter est the statements or Rev. Dr. Lowrie, in reference to the interests of the Boards; and although it does not propose any new methods of operating in the collection of funds, yet by the imminence of the peril existing to the Boards, and by the evident call of God's providence to greater fidelity in these times of trial, on the part of the Church, it would urge on all our congrega tions increased liberality in sustaining the Boards, and upon the Presbyteries strict attention to the 2d and, sth - resolutions adopted at the last meeting of Synod." Tbe following was adopted as a Standing Rule : " Resolved, That at the annual meeting of this bedy, each representative of our churches shall be called to report whether any . thing has been done for the different Boards and objects of beneficence; and if nothing has been done, to give the specific reason therefor : and if no sufficient reason can be gi,ven, the disapprobation. of Synod shall be stated and reeurcied. And if 'ally church shall not be represented, it shall be its duty to report to the Stated Clerk of Synod, in accordance with the foregoing part of this resolution." [The Stated Clerk takes the liberty of requestiog all church Sessions to make a copy of this Rule, and, insert it in their Record Book.] It; was resolved to concur in the Memo rial of the Synod of Allegheny, requesting the President of the U.nited States to ap point a day of fasting and prayer, in, view of the distressed and distracted state of the country : and in case the President does not appoint another day, ;Synod appoints, fore this purpose; the First Thursday of November. The Rev. M. A. Hoge having resigned the office of Stated Clerk, in consequence of his removal from our bounds, Mr. J. D. Smith was elected in his place. After a cordial vote of thanks to the good people of Bucyrus for their generous hospitality, Synod adjourned to meet in the First church, Zanesville, on the Third Thursday of October next, at 7 o'clock P. M. J. D SMITH, Stated Clerk. NOW, 15 It nut :.s:ouni, ing that the i,pliow• ers of the Lamb should evince less fervor and frequency of prayer, both in their homes and at the social prayer meetings, during this appalling crisis.? Surely there never was a period when the children of Zion should so: tlr t hemselves - up to call upon God's name and to lay hold of his strength, that he may preside over the deliberations of the Cabinet and endow the army with patriotism and indomitable courage, as when putting down a rebellion which not only aims to overthrow the best earthly Government, but to extend the bondage of the African race by making it the corner stone of a new Republic. Why then are the members of the Church not rushing to' the mercy seat instead of forsaking it? Two reasons may be assigned : one is the fact attested by many of the repbrts from our churches, that not a few of the profes sors of religion have their.miuds so en grossed with the matters pertaining to this convulsion, that they 'follow the example of the multitude in conversing about, battles, &c., and perusing the secular nevfspapers, during the holy hours of the Lord's day. That very day which was designed to Stem the torrent of worldliness is soerverted to political discussion, or to the icrease of intortuation respecting the waf, that they have no time, or assuredly no inclination, to adhere , to the good old practide,,of cate chising their children, and presing home upon their consciences the vital truths of the Gospel. Another reason why so minty are backsliding is, they do, not perceive clearly, nor acknowledge with contrition,. that apart from the wickedness of human agents, this civil waroyith 41 its hoyrors,,, is a judgment from heaven on account OP national Sins. -Too many forget that' the sins of this natiou are morelcriminal in:the' sight of God, -because committed in, spite of greater light and more abundant mercies., With respect to the grace- of libartlity,, , almost all the reports stato,,hat during the past year there has been only a slight dim inution of the usual contrihutiond. . If s6f,' then it is palpably evident'that the present amount collected by the Churches of this Synod is not a tithe of whit they ought to give, and of what they would give, did the constraining love of • hrist 'oervade their hearts. How trifling the .urn, $3,500; contributed to all the Boar's,' contrasted' with the millions of dollars possessed by our churches`!'ls not such • thank-offal ing from those who prOclahn been bought with a price an , ' own, almost an insult to I Father, who spared not his freely gave him for us all ? are the pastors, elders, an.ll this Synod called upon to mu past short comings and incon to wrestle with Jehovah, thal wive his work in the midst of bereavement and dnsola he would bring out of the ra around us, issues which will b fying to God, .and` fraught to all races of mankind. J. E. ALEiA New-England Co rinpo' SPRINGFIELD! OM 10, The American Board of (j for Foreign Missions hag Fifty-second Annual Meetin. This Board, ` as your readeisi one time the agent of Old an PreSbyterians, (hefere the Reformed Dutch, and 00D , . The 0. S. Presbyteriani and Dutch having now their ow , Boards, this organization is in the hand. of the New School and the. Congregation:lists. Virtu ally, however, it is a CongregatioJal insti tution. Our New •School brethren, having given theii strength to this Board for twenty-five yeare, have as a Church com paratively nothing,to . shoi as the restilt. This is certainly not because missionary fields do not furnish ground for Presbyte rianism. Perhaps the unpublished histo ry of the American Board would show a foresight in the Old School •Presbyterian Church, which the liberality• of the New- School prevented. We believe it to be among the facts yet to be brought fully out, that the natural end demanded 'develop ment of Presbyterianism in the foreign field, was checked by the Congregational baud which controls the Boston office. Unless we are entirely- mistaken, some of the most interesting missions of this Bujd, as in 'the Sandwich example,' would have been Presbyterian in their form, if the missionaries had( been allowed to organize the churches accercting to their convictions tof duty and! expediency.'. Whether the New School viillrbe permal nently satisfied with this form , of developi' meet for their church life, remains to be seen. It is hardly probable. The following' are some of the statistics of the Board's history for the past year Seven corpbrate members have died since the last, annual meeting :--- : Theodore Frelinghupsen, LL.D., Thomas S. Inasmuch as the practice which has of late prevailed, of licensing candidates to preach at the- ead of the second year of their Theological course, is attended with great evils, the Presbytery being mani festly without, an adequate basis of judg ment as to their qualifications at this imma ture stage of their studies, and they them selves being thereby subjected to hindrances and temptations to neglect for the remainder of their course ; therefore Presbytery will not ordinarily license candidates until they shall have completed the regular course of studies, as prescribed in our.
