At Lynchburg the loss is estimated at $lOO,OOO. The Orange and Alexandria and Soutbside Railroads eaoh suffer to the extent of half a million . . Man ufactories, residences and other buildings a long the rivers were swept away and (tarried down the flood. Several person were drown ed in the vicinity of Richmond. At Wash ington and Georgetown the Potomac, over flowed its banks and swept away a portion of the Long Bridge. At Harper's Ferry it is said over Nig lives were lost by drowning and perhaps thirty dwellings washed away.— A despatch says : All the buildings on the south side of Shenandoah street are injured, and about nine washed away. Only a few buildings remain on the Island. Here was the greatest destruction of life. The water was first discovered to 'be dangerously high about 8 o'clock, P., M. on the 80th. The river then rose so rapidly that in a few min utes it was a wild, dashing, fearful torrent, and being night, no human aid could render the:slightest assistance. lt was a fearful sight as house alter house was swept away and went dashing in ttio stream, with the wild shrieks of the occupants, while the sudden extinguishment of lights told too painfully the story of death. Great destitution and suffering is said to eiist throughout the Valley of Virginia. Abotzt a year since the widow and six children of James Dougherty, killed by a %nib of cars on the Baltimore and Ohio Rail road, at' 83kesville, obtained a verdict of 84.000 damages against the Company in the Superior Court of Baltimore city. A new trial was obtained, on motion of >the Compa. ny, which was concluded on '3londay by the jury awarding 810.000 daritagep, 80.000 more that; the first verdict. ge-The Rev.
