The pliysicmn in tliesj diiys who opposes vaccination should not lc called to Attend gninllpox cases and medical colleges would do well to refuse, (liplotniis to any young man who is opposed to tlmt means of prevention. The evidence of the benefit of vaeciiitition ns a. prevent ive to the disease is so overwhelm ing that public safety should not be jeopardized by the opinion of any medical crank. A nun may be honest in this opinion and we would not wish to coerce him but simply to place him in such position that he could enjoy it all by himself without possible danger to the com munity. It is claimed that the new amend ment to the constitution adopted last fall abolishes the numbering of ballots and the question has been submitted to the secretary of the commonwealth for an opinion. It is quite possible that the 'numbering will be discarded but the secretary says that inasmuch na the county commissioners and not his depart ment are charged this year with preparing the ballots they must de termine the question. The matter of level cultivation of corn and potatoes came up before the institute and while it was ad mitted thu a man might attain a measure of success by the old meth od of hilling, yet he would probably have had far better results had he pursued the level cultivation. Ask any farmer who was present at the recent institute if ho was not benefitted by the talks on the var lous subjects and if his knowledge was not materially increased. For Men Cooks. Several others are in the hands of our committee being, rend for approval. We are glad that such a large number of our scholars are interested in reading and we are anxious to give them the best books to read. We are glad to note the increased attendance at the Sabbath school since Christinas. The popular belief is that Sabbath schools are more largely attended before the time for receiving presents. If that is gener ally true it is not so this year with us. At a business meeting of the Kp- worth League it was decided to have a sociable at the church on Thursday evening, February 13th. This will be a good time to give your valen tines. On Thursday evening, February (ith, there will be n pound sociable in the interest of the Sabbath school. The members of the school will bring n pound of some article, any thing that they choose, which will be sold. Mr. White will bring hi megaletlioscope and will show bis view s to all who care to see them for 10c. The scholars of the school art to see the pictures free. Cake and lemonade will lie furnished free to all who come. The proceeds. to be for the benefit of the school. We urgt all friends of the school, and all who desire to see something new and ex eeptinnally good, to attend this sociable. The cottage prayer meetings bavt been an Inspiration to all who have attended and are so much enjoyed that a large number of invitations have been received to visit the homes of our people. It has been our pur pose to go to those homes where members of thechurch live who have been unable because of age or infirm ity to attend the services of the church. We arc willing to go however, to any home where we are invited and trust that these prayer services may roach some who do not attend church and interest them in them in the subject of personal salvation. The bill introduced in congress to make Inauguration day come in the latter part of April has met with no adverse criticism from any part of the country. The Natmnal Board of Trade now In session at Washington is in favor of penny postage but the postal au thorities think they cannot grant it while the postolliee department is not self-sustaining. Advocates of the one cent rate reply that first-class or letter mail shows a large profit for the government while nil the loss is due to the low rates on second class matter which, they say, Is a class discrimination in favor of the pub Ushers. To ctuali.e matters it is suggested that the second class privi lege be granted more sparingly. They further argue that penny post age will so Increase the number of letters sent that loss to the govern input will be minimized by the augmented volume of business. The unanimous condemnation of Kngland nnd other countries of the ship-subsidy bill ought to be a sufllc lent argument for its enactment. All dinggists nnd general stores in Pike county guarantee every bot tle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and will refund the money to any ono who is not tatisflod nftor using two-thirds of the contents.
