Van Etten, PUBLISHER, Mllford, Pike County, Pa THE PRESIDENT'S INAUGURAL The President In his address con trafcted the present situation with that of four years ago. The coun try uinoo then has made great ad vances in it prosperity and devel opment. Then there were difflcnl ties and anxieties, not all of which have yet been dispelled, but the country was expectant of great re sults and placed high confidence in its chief magistrate. He was able Monday to point out that these ex pectations had been justified and that the hopas on which his first torm were based have been realized. Our credit is strengthened, we have a surplus instead of a deficit" and our trade has overloapt the bounds of our own land and seeks in vast quantity, and with suocess, a for eign market. His address is patriotio and free from party spirit. He takes no stock with those who see a dismal outcome with our new and import ant issues whtch recent events have imposed. He says "the prophets of evil wore not the builders of the Re publio, nor in its crisis have they saved or served." "As heretofore so hereatter will the nation demon strate its fitn ss to administer any new estate which events devolve on it, and in the fear tf God will take occasion by the band and make the bounds of freedom wider yet." If the Cubans properly interpret bis words they will be satisfied that we only dosiro to give them security, peace and independence. As to the Filipino he says, "the settled pur pose long ago proclaimed to afford the inhabitants of the island self governmunt as fast as they are ready for it will be pushed with earnestness and fidelity." Just before the House passed the Army Appropriation bill with the Benate Cuban and Philippine amend ments, Representative Hull, of Iowa made a manly statement of nis con nection with the Philippine Luiubei and Developement Company, which be said, caused him to be a target of ever since Mr. William J. Bryan had attacked him during the cam paign. He said : ' I will say that I am the same man whose name has been used in connection with that laiubar company. I have something invested in it. It is a legitimate en terprise. It has never akeda favor of the government I will say that when I cannot invest my money in a legitimate enterprise, 1 wil! quit politics. I do not care to be a drone depending only upon my politics fur my living." The idea that the eonUition.s laid down by Congress for the withdrawal of American authority frum Cuba, will cause trouhle in Cuba, which is heard in some quarters, U not shared by President MeKinley or any mem ber of the Cabinet. Ou the contrary the President and hU advisers be lieve that the conditions will be com plied with by the Cubans. One thing Is very certain, they niUHt comply With every condition, named before American authority will be with drawn. If they wish us to retaiu in definite control over the island, they have only to k'rtve thecotulitionalone. Spiritual Difficulties, and Ijoit Wages. We wish to express our apprecia tion for thn rovdial greeting, given to our .people, by she pastor and members of the congregation ot the t'resliyterian church, last Salihath cvening. Whenever necessity re i quires the pastor to bo away from town, it is a source of great satis faction to know that his people are' Ted and well fed, witli the heavenly food. The writer was suddenly out of town to officiate at the funeral of an old parishioner. The funeral beine on the Sabbath took us away from our work. This we always regret, hut when we are confronted with h clear duty, it is a maxim. of every true life and of onr ministry have that diMy performed, thn' it may ho unpleasant. We hear a great deal in .tlis diys ibout church unity. A ver suggestive action has been taken bv the committee in charuo of the Meth O'tist Preachers meeting of Ne York City. On the first Monda morning of each month some repre sentatvo peach er of another denon. ination is invited to preach. It me my privilege to hear Dr. Mackei last Monday morning. Themcetini brought us nil in close synipnth' with him and the warm reception that he reoeived was evidently ap preciated. -After all the true unit' is not organic, but has it- trm ground in sympathy and united ad vice. Whatever leads us as chris' ians to labor together in love fo the advancement of Christskinirdon that has in it the elements of tru unity, and that alone. Next Tuesday night the Rev. T. II Mackenzie will cive us his ndtires. on the Religious Life of Washington We hope that a laree number of oui friends will avail themselves of the privilege of hearing Mr. .dackon.ie A half hour musical will he given U the singing class, consisting of an thems, duets and solus. A free will offering will be taken. We wish to call special attention to Lenten services as we approach the Easter season. Next Wednesday night the topic will bo, tialvat'on bv the way. It may help us to under stand this Lenten season if we re member that it has a connection with what follows. If our medita tions does not make us better after the Easter time is gone, if there fnil. to be a spiritual connection between March and April, then our present services will have lost their religi ous significance, their real value. Babies and children need proper food, rarely ever medi cine. If they do not thrive on their food something is wrong. They need a little he'p to get their digestive machinery working properly. 5101 COD Liven OIL WITH HrPOPHOSPHIUS 0fLIH$.$0DA will generally correct this difficulty. If you will put from one fourth to half a tea?poonful in baby's bottle three or four timei a day you will soon see a marked improvement. For larger children, from half to a teaspoonful, according to age, dissolved in their milk, if you so desire, will very soon show its great nourish ing power.
