It rettffirius adherence to tho doctrine of protection which has opened our mills, given labor employment and promises ronowed prosperity, sanc tions the construction of the Niear auga Canal, expresses gratitude to the Senators and Congressmen of this State for securing appropria tions for the benefit and improve ment of the rivers on our Western border, and asks that the work be continuod, and that a water way be provided between the Ohio and its tributaries, and the Great Lakes, and also a canal to the sea hprad, also reaffirming tho position of the party In favor of a law restricting immi gration, cordially approving the ad ministration of President McKinley, commending the wise, careful and efficient administration of the State Department in its various depart ments, and declaring in favor of good roads, and recommending State aid in their construction. EDITORIAL. THE STATE TICKET. The Republican State Coveution mot at Harrisburg June 2, and placed in nomination the ticket which heads this column. There are many who believed that it would not bo wise to select the rep resentative of either of the fac tions in the State as a candidate for Governor, and would have boon bet ter pleased had the choice fallen on some one not so closely identi fied with what is called the Quay irfluenoe. Not that we believe the Senator is obnoxious to the Repub licans of Pennsylvania, but because there are many sections where those who assume to be his supporters and followers have made themselves so by peculiar methods which are unsatisfactory to the rank and file. Whatever of defection thure may from the party at November, and there will be some, will be in great part aimed at the local loaders, and the State ticket must perforce, to that extent, be weakened. Ilnd n candidate boon selected npim whom nil similes of opinion could bnve united, nnd this was rosily possible, he would hnve nttrncted the full vote nnd made the local entiviiss in different sections fur more hope ful As the mutter now stands there will be great, teniptifiou to trade for self interest. In fact we believe the renl fight in the cam paign bus just commenced nnd that from now on it silent, if not open, warfare will bo enrried on within the party. Several Congressional Districts live close, nnd slight defec tions will defeat tho Republican can didate. Wo hope there will be none, nnd thnt the party will unite nnd present unbroken rnnks to the enemy, remembering that it is far better to work for the purification and strength of the party within the rankn than without. Let every one remnin true to his colors and be a Republican. The ticket, outside the head, will ho satisfactory to the people and is wholly unobjectionable in nil re spects. No better nnmes or more worthy men could have boon selec ted, and no doubt tho party will show its appreciation of this fact by rolling up for them the oht time majority. THE REPUBLICAN CONVEN TION. No onu who has followed the trend of events during the past few weeks in this State could seriously doubt the outcome of tho conven tion which met June 2. Thnt the unexpected might happen tunny hoped no doubt, but deep down in their consciousness they knew the inevitable. Mr. Wnnnmnker made a strong ca'ivass nnd succoeded in arousing a strong sentiment in the State. His assertions in regard to the incapacity and recklessness of tho last Legislature found a lodg ment in many minds, and bore fruit in the number of delegates elected for him. Tho war will tend to break up the old party lines, nnd in fact both parties are a unit now on that ques tion. Hardly any thing remains as an issue but the manner in which our State nffairs nre nnd havo been administered, hence with the party collars loosely fitting it behooves the leaders nnd those who control State matters tobewnre. There havo been disastrous ro volts in the past and some events scorn to fore-shadow thnt the future is fast ripening for a recurrence, unless the remedy of economical and honest methods are cnrefully npplied. We Will Make Them. We can "point with pride" to the fnct thnt eveiy thing needed for wnr purposes is produced in our own Country, nnd that Rnssia is now coming here to buy her war vessels. Tho late wonderful performance of the Oregon, built in San Francisco proves that our ships are perfect specimens of construction and endu rance and that our machinery hns a world wide famo is shown by the orders tor seventy-seven locomotives just received .from the Russian Government by tho Baldwin loco motive Works. In addition to those tho Baldwin people havo bookod ordors since April 1 for ton for New Zealand, six for Spain, five for Egypt two for Argentina and ono for Moxioo The Richmond works have received an ordor for seventeen locomotives for Japan, making a total of ninety four export orders in ono week. Other orders received by American bnilders from foreign countries sinco April 1 bring the grand total up to 176, and still further contracts aro pending for delivery of locomo tives in Russia and Mexico. Another instance of the triumph of intelligent labor highly pnid. It is tho Amer ican policy which has made possible this.successfu.1 invasion of foreign markets with American product ions. Will He Return by 1900. By all moans send Colonel Bryan to Manila and keep him there says tho N.Y. Herald and it is announ ced that Col. W.J. BrjansRegimont has been accepted for service nnd ordored to Manila, where ita term of duty promises to be longer than elsewhere. We hope so. Mav it be long indeed. COAST LINE OF THE UNITED STATES. The length of tho coast lino of the United States, according to the coast survey, is 5,715 miles, embracing 2,- 349 miles on tho Atlantic Ocean, 1,. 556 on the Gulf of Mexico, und l,t)10 on tho Pacific Ocean. It was rather a 'sporty' gathering, and a damp even ing, and the 'hoys' had been bragging about various wonderful doughty deeds they had done In their salad days and frappe nights. When It came Malum to be a gorgeous, circumstantial and statistical liar the colonel leaned away back and stild In his sweet Kentucky voice, for he hailed fioru that state or iginally: 'Hoys, I can't match any of the feats of strength and active valor you have told, but I can tell you a true tale of endurance that may be worth four attention. ' 'Years ago, when Texas was the paradise of stage coaches, I was travel ling for a tobacco house a long Journey, fully fifty miles. In the coach opposite me sat a mighty pretty girl, and a shaggy man, with a sombrero and a small arsenal of pistols In full sight. We had Journeyed on for about au hour, and not a word had been ex changed or a look between my fellow travoleis. The girl was everlastingly pretty, and, finnlly, catching her eye, I was tempted to wink slightly as a sort of preliminary toward breaking the lc and having some pleasant conversation. Instantly, to my horror, she turned to the human arsenal and whispered In his ear. 'Did I understand you, stran ger, to wink at this here young lady?' Only presence of mind, as thora couldn't be absence of body, saved me. I replied at once. 'Yes, sir, but let rue explain. I have a nervous disease of the eyelids. If you hud noticed me be fore you would have noticed that I wink Involuntarily very frequently. noncBtly, I couldn't help It.' 'Your ex planation Is extraordinary, stranger, but I accept It for the present,' he an swered gruffly, and from that time I think he never took his eyes off me. Bo, to keep up my part, every moment or two I had to wink one eye or the other, sometimes both. Hour after hour, gentlemen, as I live by champagne, my ocular exercise continued. I believe I am the only living man who ever wink ed to save his life, and I wunk and I wank for at least forty miles, till we reached our destination. How was that for enduiance?"
