THE RECOUP UFLECT.S THE YELLOW. Thk Sussex Record hns tleveloned rnpidly of late, nnd now comes to tin full of newsy imnigniphs, besides much other interesting mutter. It is making nn excellent bid for put ronaRonnd no doubt will bo Record ed its full slmre ns it deserves. Foi some time it i)ublished the ten com mandments ns uti editoriiil, nnd in this milliner doubtless contributed Virely to the religious education ol its readers. Of course its editors should know best nbout what tin patrons of their paper need, or what will satisfy them, but nftjer toning up their systems with such strength ening inentnl pabulum ns the Com mnndmonts, it hardly seems possi ble that they would nssiinilate such unstinted editorial adulation of the yellow N. Y. Journal ns nppenrod in the Record last week. It was a very violent change of diet from the Ten Commandments, nnd our brethern should know that there is danger in a too sudden transition, either in diot or morality. That the Dingley law is working to the ndvnntago of tho farmers in. the reduction of importations of the class of articles which they produce, ns well as the increased prices which they obtain through increased do mand for their products is shown by the fact that tho importation of articles of food nnd live animals in the month of January 189S, undor the Dingly law was more than 2,000,000 less than in the corre sponding month of tho preceding yenr under tho Wilson law, being about twelve nnd a quarter million dollars In January of tho prosent year ngninst about fifteen nndn half million in January of last yeai undor tho Wilson law. How are tho froe traders who insis ted that tho new duties placed upon hides nnd leather by tho Dingloy law would increase the .prices of boots and shoes, going to explain the facts that nil grades of boots nnd shoes are selling at less prices today than they sold nt under tho low tariff Wilson law? Tho quotations of the shoo and leather Reporter, an accept ed authority 'show that practically all grades of shoos nro wholesaling at lower rates today than they were January 1st, 1897, not a single one in the entire list showing an ad vance since that time. The Dingley law in its eighth mouth, March, showed a gain in earn ings over any preceding month in its history, boing 50 per cent great er than in its first month, whilo the customs, receipts of the eight month wore nearly 150 per cent in excess of these of the first month. The total receipts of tho Treasury during its first 'eight months wore more than $20,000,000 in excess of the receipts of the first eight months of tho Wilson law. The money in circulation in the United btntes today is much more than at any period in tho history of the country. The highest sum nam ed in the official reports of tho Treas ury Department, which gives the figures for July 1st of ervch year, is 1,660,808,708 on July 1, 1894, while its figures show the circulation on April 1, 1S98 to be 1,750 058,005. The Gold in tho country has in creased noarly 1130,000,000 since the adoption of the Chicago platform and the total coin in circulation has been increased $240,323,113, and nil this despite the assertions that our circulating medium could not incre ase without the free nnd unlimited coinage of silver at 16-to-l.
