He was born in Wilkes-Barre and was educated at Wilkes- Barre Academy, Wyoming Semi- nary, and the Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, Conn., from which he graduated in 1941. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University, class of 1945. While attending Yale, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and entered active duty in 1943, serving on the island of Guam in World War II, before being honorably dis- charged in 1945. Thereafter, he remained in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and began his ca- reer at the family business, East- ern PA Supply Co. In 1951, he was recalled to ac- tive duty and was then sent to Korea, where he took command of a platoon of Marines which had been previously led by his younger brother. In the fall 1951, he was seriously wounded by enemy machine gun fire during an action in the mountains of central Korea near the 38th par- allel. After being evacuated through Tokyo, he spent a long period of recovery in the Phila- delphia Naval Hospital. For his service to his country, he was awarded two Purple Hearts. He was honorably discharged as a 1st lieutenant. He would continue to work at his family’s business and be an active member of the communi- ty for the next 55 years. He was CEO of W. H. Conyngham & Co. Inc., whose principal businesses were Eastern PA Supply Co, a 10- location wholesale distributor of Hillside Farms, a Holstein dairy farm managed by his brother, William; Hillside Greenhouse, managed by his brother Jack, who was: also vice-president of sales at Eastern PA Supply Co.; and Hayfield Farms. He served on many communi- ty boards as a board member, of- ficer or chairman, often times for 30, 40, or even 50-plus years. He was a life member of the Veter- ans of Foreign Wars; also belong- ing to American Legion Post 132 and was a 32 degree Free and Ac- cepted Mason through the Cald- well Consistory, and also a long- time member of Kiwanis Inter- national and others. He was a member of the Bear Lake Associ- ation, Thornhurst, Pa. He was a lifelong member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Wilkes-Barre. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Marquart Conyngham, Shaver- town; brother, Jack, Dallas; son, Donald, Bear Creek; son, Mal- colm, Noxen; daughter, Tham- sin, Shavertown; son, George, Shavertown; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren. Born in Dallas, he served five years in the United States Army with tours of duty in South Korea and Japan.
