Born in Honesdale on July 17, 1948, he was a 1966 graduate of Tunkhannock Area High School. He retired from Clarks Summit State Hospital. He was a member of Moose Lodge in Tunkhannock for many years. Born in Gladbeck, Germany on June 17, 1915, she, with her mother and two siblings, endured a 16-day trans-Atlantic crossing, landing in New York in 1924. She then trav- eled to Luzerne by train to rejoin her father who arrived in America two years earlier. Educated in local schools, she wed Sherman G. Hefft on July 16, 1938 and moved to the Hefft Family farm in Kingston Township where she and her hus- band enjoyed 58 years of marriage. She worshipped as a member of the Carverton United Methodist Church in a building her husband’s family helped build. A talented seamstress, she did custom tailor- ing in several area shops until her retirement in 1980. For over 50 years, she served as the elected Inspector of Elections in Kingston Township. Surviving are her children, Elf- riede M. Turner, Shavertown; Gretchen L. Miller, Bowie, Md; Lenchen H. Radle, Harrisburg; and Milton S., Lancaster; four grand- children, two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; sev- eral nieces and nephews. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the honorary engineering frater- nity, and received his professional engineer’s license from the Com- monwealth of Pennsylvania in 1958. He worked for Brown Instru- ment Co. in Philadelphia and, in 1953, moved to Hartford, Conn. where he worked in the jet aircraft engine design laboratories of Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. In 1954, he joined the United States Navy and attended the Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI. He was then transferred to the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1960, he founded Martin and Fladd Consulting Engineers which, in 1983, merged with Ken- neth N. Rogers Consulting Engi- neers to form Martin Rogers Asso- ciates. Martin was chairman and one of the original members of the Dallas Area Municipal Authority for more than 35 years, a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Dal- las, a Habitat for Humanity board member and volunteer and a driver for Meals on Wheels of Wyoming Valley. He was instrumental in the founding of the Dallas Area Fall Fair, now known as the Luzerne County Fair, where he was chair- man of the grounds for over 20 years. In recognition of his civic contri- butions, he was designated a Ro- tary Club of America Paul Harris Fellow for outstanding community service. In March of this year, he was the first Rotary Club of Dallas member to be honored a second time as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was nominated in March as a candi- date for the Jefferson Award for outstanding public service. He was organist and choirmaster at St. John’s Lutheran Church on River Street for over 30 years. In ad- dition, he was a guest organist at many area churches and at Zion Lutheran Church in Barnegat Light, N.J., where the family main- tains a summer home. Surviving are his wife, Joan, and their children, Eric, Kimberly Koehl, of Trucksville; Jeff, of Dort- mund, Germany; Craig, of Wood- bury, Conn.; Kurt, of Westampton, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; sister, Marion Frantz; brother, Leonard, both of Wilkes-Barre; numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Wilkes University in 1958, after which he became associated with IBM Corp. where he worked as an executive ig sales and marketing for nearly { ) years, retiring in 1987. : In recent years, he was highly ac- tive as a member of the board of trustees of Wilkes University and the university’s alumni council. Wilkes honored him in 2006 for his many years of service and commit- ment. He also served as chairman of the Crippled Children’s Associ- ation in Scranton and as chairman of the Boy Scouts Explorers of Cen- tral New York. He was active with the Irem Golf Association and the Irem Chanters, a men’s choir. He was a member of the Firwood United Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre, and its choir. He was also a member of the Nanticoke Masonic Lodge.
