The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, August 8, 1990 15 SPORTS Misericordia seeks NCAA membership College Misericordia will peti- tion the National Collegiate Ath- letic Association (NCAA) for membership during the 1991-92 school year, and hopes to be approved for membership the fol- lowing year. The switch to NCAA membership will mean major changes for the College in athletic policy and competitive play. Ifaccepted, Misericordia would compete in the Division III, the largest of the NCAA divisions, and be eligible for NCAA post-season competition. As a member, Mis- - ericordia could seek competition > 4 against other division institutions such as King's College, Wilkes University, the University of Scran- ton, Lycoming College and Widener. “The Middle Atlantic Confer- ence would be a good match for us, offering Misericordia a national level of competition,” said Scott Kalicki, Misericordia’s dean of students. “Many of our students would be on the playing fields with their former colleagues from high school competition.” Coinciding with the change is the redesign and building of three new athletic fields, named the “Anderson Athletic Fields” in honor of benefactors Dr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson of Wilkes-Barre. This $100,000 project includes level- ing and resurfacing the College's field hockey and soccer fields, and the construction of Misericordia’s first women's softball field. In anticipation of the NCAA mem- bership, all playing fields will be designed to meet the national association's regulations. Field construction should be completed by mid-August. Currently, Misericordia is a member of the National Associa- tion of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA), which allows athletic schol- arships, NCAA regulations pro- hibit such scholarships. As of September, 1990, Misericordia will be in compliance with NCAA regu- lations, and will use the two-year waiting period to assist students attending the College on athletics awards to find other forms of fi- nancial assistance. The majority of these students will be eligible for financial aid through academic scholarships, grants, loans and work-study funds. “Athletic scholarships are not allowed at the NCAA Division III because its primary focus is aca- demics and education,” Kalicki explained. “Athletics support and complement the educational proc- ess, but are not the focus. That's our philosophy, too. Now we can rechannel the funds that were going for athletic scholarships to serve the whole college campus.” HL WINNERS - Three Harveys Lake boys finished in the top 10 in the Kingston Home Run Derby.
