Misericordia breaks ground for new athletic fields College Misericordia officials “recently broke ground on the south . lawn of the campus for the rede- sign and building of new athletic fields. “The new athletic fields are part of the College's first phase of growth for the '90s,” said Dr. Pasquale DiPasquale, Jr., Miseri- cordia president. The redesign and building of new athletics fields was included in the College's 5-year plan, along with the current new student townhouses project and joining the NCAA Division III. The fields will be named the “Anderson Athletic Fields” in honor of benefactors, Dr. and Mrs. Robert S. Anderson, of ‘Wilkes-Barre, according to Dr. DiPasquale. The Anderson Athletic Fields will include soccer, field hockey and softball fields. Com- pletion is expected early this fall. “The Anderson Athletic Fields reflect the commitment to College Misericordia and the community by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson in promoting the value of educa- tion, health and fitness,” said DiPasquale. In 1969, Dr. Anderson returned to this region when he retired as a full colonel from the US Army, having served for 31 years as a physician. Dr. Anderson special- ized in public health and general medicine, holding masters degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University and a medical degree in Temple University School of Medicine. In keeping with their commit- ment to education, health and fit- ness, Dr. Anderson, who is now retired from the medical profes- sion, also recently established the Anderson Endowed Scholarship Fund at Misericordia as a tribute to his wife, Geraldine, a former Coughlin High School girls’ physi- cal education director and pres- ently a resident of Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre. Both Dr. and Mrs. Anderson, graduates of Coughlin High School, established this scholarship to benefit Cough- lin students. Mrs. Anderson, a 1930 Cough- lin graduate, developed and coached the school’s girls’ teams and promoted girls’ sports in other local school districts throughout the area. She also created Cough- lin's majorette drill team, which was the first of its kind in North- eastern Pennsylvania. She offici- aled at many girls’ sporting events in the area and often spent her summers directing waterfront programs at New York and Penn- sylvania girl scout camps.
