A Phase of the Newly Married Who Hava Just Started Housekeeping. "Wo see," said Mr G.llmmerby, "all sorts ot people looking in at all sorts of store windows; women looking In at the beautiful things displayed in the windows of dry goods shops; chil dren, enchanted, looking in at the toy windows; hungry people halting to look longingly at the steaks and chops and turkeys and celery invitingly ar rayed In the window of the restaur ant; skilled mechanics viewing with keen Interest the fine tools shown In the window of the dealer in such things. "We see all sorts of people looking in at all sorts of store windows, but among all these people I think I like best the young married couple looking in at the window of the furniture store. "I like young married people any way, happy and hopeful as they are; of limited means perhaps, but with life and the world before them, with the present and the future rosy. Their present stock of housekeeping goods may he small, but how nicely they make It do, how happy they are with what they've got now, and then with what Joy do they contemplate adding to their stock as they go along as they have the means. "There's one corner in the sitting room, for instance, In which a big comfortable chair that she would so much like to get for him would fit so nicely, and they are going to have It some day. And the day comes when they've saved up pretty nearly enough to get it and she has had her eye on Just the chair they want for a long time. "And some day she meets him wtien he is coming home from business and walks home with him, a young cou ple pleasant to see, and she halts blm on the way In front of the window in which she has seen this chair. "A busy thoroughfare, brilliantly lighted, and all the shop windows like wise bright with light, and in front of this particular window where the furniture Is this young wife halts her husband and turns him there to faco it. And over In a corner is the chair she likes and in a moment you see them both looking at It intently. "And you can't hear what they say because these young people don't talk loudly, but you can imagine her say ing to him: "That's the chair, George, that big chair over in the corner, and you can imagine him saying to her: " 'How splendid!' "And then they both stand and look at it for a while and talk about It a little, about how nicely it will go in that corner and how nicely it will go with the other things in the room and how very comfortable It will be, and then with her clinging to his arm a little closer now they move on along with the throng toward home. "Surely there can be no greater de light in shopping than comes to the young married couple keeping house buying things that they need or for their home's adornment as they can as they go along. What a Joy It must be to buy these things when at last they can, and what a Joy they must find In their possession as they buy them one by one to add to their home's com pleteness, comfort and beauty; and surely of all the people that I see looking In at the store windows none gives me more pleasure than the young couple looking in at the win dow of the furniture store at the things they are going to buy." New York Sun. King Edward's Friend. The list of suggested fellow guests of royalty Is an anxious and serious question for the hostess, for even the most exalted have their likes and dis likes, and inadvertently to introduce & Jarring element would spell disas ter. Royalty's favor Is capricious. Who would have thought that a plain untitled Yorkshire squire, with the unpromising name of Sykes, would be one of the most intimate friends of the British royal family, constantly en tertaining the : present King and Queen, staying with , them at Sand ringham, and being generally on terms of intimacy such as kings very rare ly allow? Christopher Sykes Is a very notable Instance, for as a general rule Eng land's King and Queen pay visits that are few and far between, and those only In as many houses as may almost be numbered on the fingers of one hand. Harper's Bazar The Road to Prosperity A story Is told of Marshal Lefeb rre, Duke ot Dantzic, that favorite of Napoleon, which Illustrates his own. consciousness ot the qualities that had made him what he was. He was vexed at the tone of envy and unkindness with which a companion of his childhood, who met htm in his prosperity, spoke of his riches, titles and luxury, and said in reply, "Well, now you shall have it all but at the price which I have paid tor It. We will go into the garden, and I will fire a musket at you sixty times, and then if you are not killed everything shall be yours." A Anaut, V ANNOUNCEMENTS.
