The "old man" seldom retreTvts under fire, but if he does he will leave little cause for congratulations on the part of the "insurgents." Judge Persuing lias a very de cided opinion concerning young men who lead girls to ruin and refuse to accept responsibilities. He scath ingly arraigned two of tho offenders on Monday and expressed regret that the laws were not more stringent in providing support for illegitimate off springs. Ex-Senator John J. Coyle, lately of Schuylkill county, can now be classed with those statesmen whose occupation Is gone. He is the gentle man who, as a member of the legisla ture two years ago, secured an appro priation for surgical instruments for a hospital for which no site had yet been purchased in short, the hos pital was a myth. An act which has received the sig nature of Governor Stone is ono to repeal one section and amend another of a former law granting power to counties, cities excepting cities of the first and second classes boroughs. municipalities and school districts of this Commonwealth which have issued bonds or other interest-bearing evidences of indebtedness, to redeem the same and issue new bonds there for, with or without interest coupons attached thereto. It became a law on the first day of March. Henry Austin Adams, of Brook lyn, N. ST., editor of Donohue's Mag azine, was at one time an Episcopal clergyman, but is now a convert to the Catholic faith. In a recent lecture he said : "Political economists say there is one thing and only one thing on which society rests, and that is the home. Destroy its God appointed sacredness and the country will fall and all the sacred influences that radiate from the home will be wiped away. A true friend of the home is the Roman Catholic church and the thing that is debauching the home is the divorce. In all this country there is only one voice raised sternly against divorce, only one church that is irre vocably opposed to it, and that is the Roman Catholic church. It refuses to justify it In any way." The crowded condition of the Miners' hospital greatly hampersDr. Blddle's staff In their work, and the comfort and treatment of the patients is interfered with because of these conditions. The board of trustees are living in" the hope that the Legis. lature will be liberal enough in grant ing an appropriation that will be large enough to cover the expense of erecting the additional ward that is bo badly needed. There is no more worthy institution in the state than is this one that through its efficiency brings aid and comfort to thousands of the afflicted men of the coal re gion every year, and state funds could not be expended in a more worthy cause. With the limited staff it is source of wonder to those who visit the institution and look over the records to see the amount of good work that is done there under the supervision of Dr. J. C.
