Dukes, In Unlontown, Pa., over a decade ago, booauso ho seduced Miss Nutt, Is dy ing from wounds Inflicted yesterday by Mrs. John Pnyton, who committed tho net aftor Nutt, In a drunken rage, had fatally shot her. Neither can llvo. Leonard Colo man, a hlrod man, who attempted to save Mrs. Payton's life, Is lying seriously wounded, having received a bullet from Nutt's revolver, but will recover. Tho crime was most horrlblo and unprovoked. Tho promlnonco of the families makes It moil sensational. Tho Nutts and Dukes were at ono time prominent politicians in Pennsylvania, whilo Coloman, who Is 27 years of age, originally camo from Now York, where ho was woll known. Fourteen years ago it. li. Dukes, then a prominent lawyer In Unlontown. Pa., seduced Miss Nutt, and killed her father in an encounter arising out of this. He was acquitted on a plea' of self defense, nud was then killed by. James Nutt, the girl's brother, who wa? In turn acquitted on a plea of emotional Insanity. Tho trial created a great sonsa tlon at tho time. Shortly aftonvards young Nutt moved to Kansas, to where Ills present farm is situated, and mannged his mother's fnrm. Ho was considered a good citizen, and be- camo prosperous. Until two years ago the i'aytons worked for Nutt, living on his farm. Tho relations becamo strained, how ever, and tho Paylon family, consisting of tho parents and flvo children, rented a farm eight miles from Nutt's plaoo, from a Mrs. A. B. Bradbury. I'ayton has boon away from homo most of tho present winter cutting Ico, during which time Nutt renewed his relations with tho family. Nothing out of tho way was dlsccruable in his conduct, howovor, until bo sauntered Into tho Paytou house hold at a lato hour under tho influeuco of liquor. Paytou was absont, and Coleman, tho hired man, was tho only other man on the promises. Nutt, who had been on u week's sprco, was In no pleasant mood, and gruffly ordored Mrs. Payton to got him somo supper. Mrs. Payton complied, and scenting trouble, quietly got tho chil dren from tho room. As he ate Nutt be came mora abusivo toward Mrs. Payton and seemed to be bocomlng insano. When ho had finished catiugho deliberately drew his revolver, and pointing It at the now thoroughly frigh toned woman, cried: "I'm going to kill you." Before sho could make a move he car ried his threat Into effect, sending three bullets into her body. Tho shots attracted Coleman, who rushed into tho house with an ax In his hand. Tho Instant ho en tered Nutt leveled his weapon at him and fired. Two shots struck tho would-be res cuer. Ho fell to tho floor, and for a time lay unconscious lu tht-blood that poured from his wounds. At tho samo tlmo Mrs. Payton, with a superhuman effort, raised herself from the floor and socurod tho ax. Nutt had sunk down, overcome by liquor, and was help less. Hushing to where ho lay tho woman, with her own wounds bleeding profusely and herself weak from loss of blood, ruined blow aftor blow upon Nutt's head. Not until sho was too weak to longer wlold tho ax did sho desist. Then she sank to tho floor and became unconscious. Coleman first camo to bis senses, aud found both Nutt and Mrs. Payton lying in great pools of their blood. Tying Nutt to a chair, Coleman gave tho alarm. When asslstanco arrived tho woman was beyond help. Neither Mrs, Payton or Nutt aro able to relate tho story of the crime. Colo man is also In a bad way, but will recover. Nutt has been removed to Atchison. The Nutt-Duke. Tragedy. Pittsbuiiq, Feb. 8.
