The Victim T.neernteil with Knives, Btrlpiiml or Ills Clothes nnd Hanged to n Telegrapli Polo, ami Ills lloily After ward Kcilliceit to Anlici. JlEMI'IlIB, Telitl., July !. The Jnll of Shelby county, within the city limits, wns broken Into by several hutiured men at midnight and Lee AVnlker, n repulsive black youth, itged 10 years, was taken out nnd strung up to a telegraph polo near tho bonk of Wolf river and a few hundred yards from the jail. Afterwards his body was cremated in th yard of it lumber firm near by. The negro was a native of north Mississippi and his calendar of crlmcH Is among the blackest lit history. AVithln the past week he has made four attempts to commit rape, two being suc cessful, one victim being a small colored girl, W years old, who wns badly Macer ated, and the other a married woman of his own color. Last Tuesday, fifteen miles east of this city, ho dragged Miss Molllo McCaddeu from her horse on the public highway and attempted to outrage her. She only os-i caped by the aid of her sister, who beat the villain oil with n heavy stick af ter both girls were nearly stripped of their clothing. An alarm wns spread, nnd posses of armed citizens chased tbo negro ncross the country for more than thirty miles. He was finally captured at tho housoof his mother, seven miles from New Albany, Miss., and placed In jail, where ho remained until the mob took him out for execution, lie made a full confession uf bis bestial ci lmes, und had only been our, of jail a few weeks, whoro ho was sen tenced for rape, committed In tho vicinity of bis parents' home. AVnlker said he acted ns he did because he could not help it. His parents corrob orate his plea of tincontroluble impulse, and say that since lie was 15 years old ho has assaulted twenty or thirty women. AVlld disorder reigned about tho jail as tho mob gathered to wreak vengennce. The gates of tho south wall of the mnssivo structure were forced with a bar of rail way iron used as a battering ram on tho shoulders of men, and after several at tempts rquads of men crowded within the walls. Sheriff McLendon wns struck over the head with a chair within the jail door as ho tried to keep the mob out of tho door. Ho was cnrrled upstairs, placed in bed and received surgical attention. None of tho mob were masked, and seemed to bo mainly young railway switchmen. The railway bar was, after several uttempts, gotten inside of the jail and the two iron doors were battered down, occupying half an hour before tliey reached the cell where the victim was. Tbo man was taken out, all the doors being thrown open, but no other prisoners were interfered with. Tho man'H clothing wits torn from his body as be moved with the mob to AA ill lams' lumber yard, 200 yards north of the jail, where ho was strung uptoatelegraph polo. Ho was naked, n lighted gas lump near by making him plainly visible to the tjirong. He was lacerated with knives and his throat was cut before being finally hanged. His hands not having been tied, ho clutched at the rope when raised off his feet. Tho sight was a ghastly one. He wns a powerful build, his head towering nbove those of the mob who surrounded him. One of the lynchers stumbled nnd foil while tho victim was being carried to the telegraph polo, and tho crowd trampled on him, breaking his jaw nnd probably injur ing him fatally. Sheriff McLendon is badly hurt. He seems to havo concussion of the brain. Iu two hours his remains were only nshea among the embers of the funeral pile with which ho had been destroyed. The lynch ing was very similar to tho Bnrdwell af fair, the body being cremated after the hnnging in full view of 1,000 men, women and children. A llrother's Murderous Vengennce. Little Hock, July m.
