Dr. John A Strouse, only child of Elias and Sarah StroiiHc, was born in Monroe townnhip, Oct. 22, WA, died Nov. 11, 18H3, ived 21 j enrH, and 20 iluyn. He was a prominent young man well educated and well liked by all who knew him. BchhIch a common Hchool education, he attended Se lniHjfrovo Institute for four years and graduated. He taught two term of Hchool at Khaiiiokiu Dam with good buccchh. He read medi cine under the direction of Dr, Sheets of Northumberland, and was. attending lectures this fall at the Jefferson Institution at Philadelphia where ho contracted the sickness which proved fatal. He took sick on the. 21st of October, one day before his birthday, with malaria symptoms which tin lied into typhoid. Ho was somewhat neglected while in l'hila di lphia, but after his return he had all the aid through Drs. Hottenstein and Sheets that could bo given, but mm ms time liad come. Jle was a pious young man and belonged to the Lutheran church of Shamokin Dam. He was buried last Thursday after noon at Schnee's church where Dr. Dimni, his former teacher officiated. The friends of the deceased have the sympathy of the entire commun ity. AritiE.M. Cktiikvi U.K. Thanksgiving day is coming around rapidly. Prepare to give thanks for we have much to be thankful for. It is also not too early to look around for Thanksgiv ing day invitations to dinner. County Supt. Herman visited our town schools last week. I noticed what was said in last week's 1'ost about Joel Orohs' tur nip that measures 20 inches in eir cuiufcrcuce. This is rather small in comparison to one raised by Jacob Shell on his land about 1 mile south east of this place. We hope to be pardoned for knocking the props from under Mr. Grohs' big turnip and claim that the belt belongs to thin end of the township. ; Vnt II. Hart man and wife were among friends in Fremont over Sun day. Everybody of any account nowa days has a cold. Ibither cold on Saturday night for gate hanging. Why in it that you don't keep company in the house with the young man instead of sparking him at the front door or on the street. If he is worthy of your company ho is worth a seat in your parlor, instead of being out on the street these chilly eveuingsprovi ed the old man would not interfere. Judge Furst on Inquest. In refusing to approve nine of the inquisitions lit Id by the corner and justices of the peace of Centre coun ty, Judge Turst concludes his rea sons therefor in the following words: "When a coroner, or a justice in his absence, is called upon to riew a dead body, he should make some reasonable inquiry into tho circum stances of tho death before proceed ing to summon a jury and hold the inquest. This preliminary inquiry would havo in all their cases devel oped tho fact that there wero either witnesses present or that death was produced by natural causes. When the surrounding facts do not show violence, and thero is no reason for supposing a felonious destruction oi tne person tliero is no neccessity lor an inquest, liut where the con trary appears or the death is envel 1 . 1 !. ii-ii in mystery, u is a proper case for an inquest. Death by buicide may or may not be good ground for an inquisition. Violence is preseu in Such cases. If, however, tho facts are known which clearly show the case to bo suicide, it is improper to summon an inquest. The inquest would simply declare what was pre viously known. If an employer desires an inquest in order to establish the fact that he was not responsible therefor, such inquest is held in his interest, and not for tho public good ; he should bo willing to pay tho expense incident to the same. It is very dear that it should not bo held at tho expeuso of the county. Wo have thus stated tho priuci pies which should govern the hold nig of an inquest, for tho benefit of all persons who may bo intereste herein, and if the officers of the county observe the same in the per N C.
