The Evolution of the Mind. i;'on!rt'tctlon pHK.' fuur.) above I ! ii sm rounding peaks, towers in crystalhue grandeur to companionship with the stars. So Christianity, upheld by a fiiitli divine, rises above all other beliefs, aud in celestial serenity, holds communion with its God. The next great factor in amel iorating world conditions is learn ing. In every modern nation it is a necessary factor. Every thiug of importance has bcou ex amined under the search light of the power of learning. The stars have been numbered. Space has been measured. The finest atoms and the largest planets have alike been classified. As Athenian bravery arose with the danger at Marathon, so does tlie power of reason increase as the prob lems grow harder. Obstacles that have defied the power of the mind for ages are being swept away by this growing tide of uni versal uuderstandiug. The third great factor in gen eral growth is invention. By invention's magic wand, forests have been transformed into cities the ore of the earth has' been spun into a web that covers every inhabitable land, the lightning has been brought down f i oni the heavens, and has been made tne servant of man's genius, carrying his voice from state to state, and his thoughts around the eartli. With the aid of inventions man has investigat ed the world. He has establish ed colonies throughout tho earth. On the terra incognita, of five centuries ago has been establish ed the greatest and graudest of repubhes-our own Uuited States. Invention has banished the age of superstition. It has aided in bnuging "peace on earth and good will to men.'' Kecords show that the mind of man has steadily advanced. Yet there are some who claim that man will again retrograde, and that our civilization will perish as did those of the Greeks and Ro mans. This theory may truth fully be .refuted. There are two great causes, which tend to make a national intellect grow weaker. The first of which is the slavery of a part of a people in subjection to another part a condition winch the Creator never meant to have exist. The second is deadly wars. Most of the early peoples were guilty ot both these evils, and some of these nations were the most enlightened of their lime. But now these wrongs are pass ing away. The human race is seen pursuing its career of great est success, far above the clouds of slavery and perpetual war. The gray-haired usher, Time, is placing the crimes of mankind farther and farther back the end less aisles of antiquity. We need no more to dream of the golden age of the past; but rather look forward to the era of Truth and Justice, and believe with Milton that "Time will run back and fetch the, age of gold. Then, judging by the intellect ual works of man, wa may right ly conclude; the mind is a van able, which slowly yet irresisti bly approaches a limit of perfec tion. Tho tendency of the mind has ever been toward greatness. Like tho chambered nautilus it has jrown into larger habitations in each succeeding age. And like the nautilus it leaves its "out grown shell by life's unresting sea." And in the future, as each age shall rescue its offspring from the mighty sepulchre of the past. and shall leave its store of knowl edge on the already vast mound of truths accumulated, the phil osopher of a day to come, mount ing this height, may pierce his narrow horizon, and loolf farther and farther into the limitless in finity "Still achieving, still pur suing," and ever tearing that great Example, in whose image man was created. Fa. - FOR THE LAND'S SAKE Each year finds an increase in the use of fertilizers. Many men, who. a few years ago, had no faith in the nse of fertilizers, have been-converted to a belief in their use by seeing the marvelous success of its use by their neighbor. Many inferior grade's of fertilizers have been thrown upon the market, which have had a tendency to weak en the confidence of people using phosphate as a crop producer. I have heard many people express a desire to secure a reliable fertilizer; and after a carertul investigation ot the merits of several brands, I find that M. E, Wheeler & Cos. fertilizers are far superior to many makes now used in this section. My first shipment of this excellent brand of phos phate is now in and every sack of it is fresh and pure stock. To the man who wants a first class phosphate at the lowest possible price, 1 will say that a trial of my fer tilizers will convince him that I carry a line without an equal. .
