Engler fdled'the pul pit at the M. E. Cnurch Sunday evening and his sermon was much appreciated by the congregation. Mrs. "VV. B. Ritter was called to Whitedeer Pa. ; the early part of this week to attend the funeral of an uncle. The display of fruit and vege- tables at the Forksville Fair was exceptioanlly line and of wliicb the agricultural people of the eouu ty may well feel proud. Rev. and Mrs. T. F. Ripple of Luzerne County are visiting Mrs. Ripple's parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Eddy. Mr.* Ripple will preach in the Methodist church Sunday morning. Rev. 11. L. Jarett, pastor of the M. E. Church was suddenly taken ill 011 Sunday at Eagles Mere. He has gone to his home at Selinsgrove for a few weeks to regain his health. Sheriff Brown conveyed the two prisoners sentenced to the penitentiary, to their future home, last week. He was accompanied by Lyman Norton of llillsgrove, and Edgar sick of Cherry Mills. A large Teachers Training Class has been organized in the Sones town M. E. church and has success fully passed the first examination under the leadership of Rev. 8. B. Bidlack. Hones town is trying to help Sullivan county reach the front line at Shamokin this Fall. Mr. C. R. Pennock of Kennett Square, President of the Lake Ma koma Company, was a business man at the County Seat this week. Mr. Pennock states that several lots have recently been purchased and a number more sales about to be made, on which cottages will be erected earl}' next season. Rev. and Mrs. S. 11. Engler of Medix Run spent the early part of the week in town. They had been at llillsgrove to attend the funeral of Mrs. Engler's mother, Mrs. Bry an, who died very suddenly. Mrs. Bryan was a daughter of the venerable Joseph Little of Pic tnre Rocks, who at the present time is very ill. Sonestown is keeping abreast of the times in more ways than one, for she now has a Rural Delivery route which will deliver mail to the inhabitants along the foot of North Mountain from Sonestown to Nord mont, and many people living near the latter place will receive their mail from this source, Mr. Hugh Parker is the carrier. Mrs. L.'L, Ford and daughter Mable closed their cottage on Mon day and left on the evening train for Philadelphia, after staying at Laporte five weeks longer than in previous summers, for the benefit of Miss Mables health which is much improved. W. J. McCartney returned from Maine for a few days last week to look after his lumbering interests at this place. He returned to Maine Thursday accompanied by his wife where they will remain for several weeks. The reopening of the Sonestown Church has been postponed to Oct. 25th. two weeks from this Sun day. The men in charge of im provements have been unable to finish same before that time. Rev. S. B. Bidlack will preach at the following places this Sab bath: Mt. Vernon Sunday after noon, Sonestown Sunday evening, Muucy Valley Sunday morning. He willl also preach at Kedron Saturday evening. Miss lone Mason returned to Philadelphia Saturday where she Ik attending Miss Boice's school. In the High School boys' Athlet ic contest at the Fair, the boys of the Estella High School carried of the honors. On Thursday evening, Oct. 1, at the Universalist parsonage, at To wanda, Winfield S. Brencbly and Miss Lillian Rosback were united in marriage. Mr. Ernest Burrows of Picture Rocks, and Miss Caroline Osier of Bryan Mills were married at the home of the bride's parents, Thurs day. October 1. The bride was charmingly attired in a gown of white embroirdered messaline, and was attended by two bridesmaids. She is a daughter of Hon. David Osier, and is well known in the western part of this county where she has often visited relatives. The groom is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. C. "W. Burrows, and is connected with his father in busi- ness. The township high schools of the state will be given 90 per cent, of the maxiurn allowed in each of the three classes out of the state appropri ation of $187,500 for that purpose. This is the decision reached by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Schaeffer. The rate payment on the borough schools, which are separated for the first time this year, has not been fix ed. Bay. Misses Mazie and Myrl Phillips are the champion chestnut pickers of this pi ice. On Friday afternoon they decided togo for chestnuts only a short distance from their home. After an hours picking they return ed with nearly three quarts of fine chestnuts. They say there are still more on the trees. Donald Myers and Harry Secules of Strawbridge spent Saturday with friends at this place. Owing to an extra ctop of corn, Peter Swank was compelled to make an addition to his corn house. Mr. Swank recently constructed a large bank barn and made other improve ments which have added greatly to the appearance of his farm. Born October 2nd. to Mr. and Mrs. William Reece a daughter. The abundant apple crop in this section will give occupation to many of the farmers for some time. The making of cider and apple butter has been in progress for nearly two weeks The following young people com posed a party of chest nut-pickers: Messers Walter Hazen, Howard Bay and Misses Pearl and Blanch. House knecht. The party left on Saturday morning for North Mountain. They reached the summit at an early hour when the search for chestnuts at once began and continued until uoon. Before leaving the mountain, the highest point was visited by the party. They were fortunate in land ing about twenty-five quarts ofchest nuts. The farmers have been busy for some time bringing cattle from their respective pastures. M. J. Phillips, who had five head on the mountains near Muncy Valley, was unfortunate in tinding one in a deep well. The animal undoubtedly was in search for water when it came to its disas trousjend. Jerry temple and Monroe Sheer wood, were successful in bringing in a fine coon one night last week. How Fast He Could Go.
