Jeremiah Kelly, HUGHESVILLE. "ETERNAL VIGILANCE IS THE PRICE OF LIBERTY." LAPORTE, PENNA., THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 189!). S. S. ROGERS VS HERALD. The Herald's Tactics In Local Politics Are Un popular, and Indicates that Something GREATLY NEEDS TO BE RESTRICTED To the Limits Where Everything of the Kind is Supposed to Enjoy Unrestricted License. In reply to the Herald's campaign of mud slinging at Adam Baumunk, permit us to parallel some of the Chairman Scouten can make the assertions with the sworn truths re- ' 'emocraracy of this county dive specting them and which we trust ( ' own deeper and come up dirtier will dispose of them in a manner than any other political misleader of satisfactory to the voters of Sullivan an( '' ent or of modern times. State of Pennsylvania, County of Sullivan, as: Before me the subscriber, a justice of the peace in and for said county personally appeared Saddler S. Rog ers, who being duly sworn according to law doth depose and say : That on or about August 1, 18S)!>, A. L. Plotts of the township of Elk land, came to nay house and then and there repeated the substance of an article that had recently appeared in the Sullivan (\noity IleraUl to the effect that Adam Baumunk had in formed Mr. A. T. Mulnix that he (Baumunk) had received thirty dol lars to withdraw as a candidate for the nomination of County Commis sioner in 1890. In commenting up on the article as stated by said A. L. IMotts, but without any reference whatever to Adam Baumunk, or any other person in particular, I stated, in a general way, that "Any person that would take money for election purposes might take it for other pur poses," meaning thereby, that a man L who would sell his vote for money, or any consideration, could not be trusted in a position of trust or re sponsibility. In the Sullivan County Herat'! un der date of September 2<ith, 1899,the following editorial referring to the above conversation appears : "In conversation with a gentleman sit his residence a short time ago Mr. S. S. Rogers, one of our county com missioners, gave it as his opinion tljat Adam Baumunk was not tit for county commissioner, that he could be bought, and continuing he said lie (Baumunk) would take money for election purposes, and a The above affidavit of Baddler S. Rogers leaves the Sndiran fount,'/ llerala without even a prop to save it from a terrible fall. The llerald in its issue of Sept. 2(1, speaks edltorally us follows: "Every person who is well aquainted with Mr. Rogers will agree with us when we say that he is a gentleman who does not talk at random; he weighs well his utterances and knows where of he speaks. It should not be for gotten that Mr. Rogers is a resident of Mr. llaumauk's township, and is no doubt, much better aquainted with him than the writer and we conclude that Mr. Rogers hit the nail on the head." The "Herald" is certainly correct in its statment as to the character of Saddler S. Rogers. That is one point upon which all will agree. We heartily endorse the statment and unite with it in declaring that Mr. Jtof/ers is a yentteman; that he does nut tall: (if random; that he ireiylis ml! his idferatiees and knows whereof he speaks ." Now, what does Saddler S.Rogers say about this conversa tion. Read the above affidavit. It is the solemn declaration of Mr Rog ers under oath. Again in the issue of Oct. 4, the Herald says editorially: " If Mr. Rogers will put himself on record denying over his own signa ture, the allegations made by us, we ■ will furnish proof of a high eliarac j ter that he uttered the language published by us and even more." Now come on with the proof above referred to and let us see whether anything can be invented, devised 1 or manufactured that will weigh for a moment in the minds of the honest citizens of Sullivan county with the solemn oath of Saddler S. Rogers. man who wotild take money in that way would take it in another." Again in the issue of the Sullivan (bunt)/ Herald of October 4, 1899,the following editorial appears : "We saicl in an issue of the 20th ult. that S. S. Rogers gave it as his opinion that Adam Baumunk was not tit for county commissioner, that he could he bought; that he would take mon ey for election purposes, and a man who would take money iu that way would take it in another. This state ment was made by Mr. Rogers to one of bis neighbors a short time be fore the Republican Convention." I most positively and emphatically deny that I ever made these state ments as published in the Stilli rati (hunt// Hertihl concerning Adam Baumunk and the said editorials, above quoted, are absolutely and unqualifiedly false and were publish ed, as 1 verily believe, for the sole purpose of attempting to injure the character of Adam Baumunk. 1 further state that 1 have known Adam iiaumunk for over thirty years and we have resid.nl in the same township for the last sixteen years. That 1 regard him as an honest, upright citizen; that his character is above reproach; that as a township officer he has proven himself honest and capable, and that in my opinion lie is well qualified morally and intellectually for the office of County Commissioner, and 1 believe will, if elected, perform the duties of the office with inteli gence, honesty and fidelity. ' That the Republicans of this coun ty never had a better chance to win than this fall, is the opinion of all careful political observers. This opinion is founded on rejmrts of a very encouraging nature from every portion of the county. The danger of over confidence always looms up, but we hope that no Republican in the county will underestimate the value, not only of his own vote but of his personal effort to add some thing to the grand total. If every one realizes the value of this' the majority for each and every one of the candidates will be large. With a splendid State ticket in the licit I. headed by the brave Lieutenant Colonel Harnett for State Treasurer, there is no occasion for a division of sentiment among the party follow ers. Mere at home we have a uni formly strong county ticket, every candidate being littcd for the office to which he aspires. ()tto IJehr will make a capital Treasurer for our county. Me is a gentleman of dis tinction as well as ability and will make a most courteous and obliging public official. This is the proper time to again elect a Republican board of county commissioners and it is safe to say that two men of such sterling worth as Adam Haumunk and Jap. Taylor will occupy the commissioners office during the next three years. For Auditors we have popular and able candidates in the persons of Anson I'. Starr and t'has. Warren who are highly competent for the office. With this splendid ticket in the field, and w'*h an harmonious and active county organization the results of the election should exceed the most sanguine expectations. Every Republican in Sullivan county is urged to tret down to work now. Each man can devote a small part of his time to the performance in behalf of the welfare of his county and the continued prosperity of tin nation. Begin work now and keep it 11 ]> until the election, now close at hand. Jjocol Necrology, nuowx. Mrs. l'hoebe Brown, of Davidson township, departed this life Thurs day, Oct. 12.
