THE REPUBLICAN. W. M. CHENEY. - - - - E.ti tor. i FRIDAY AUGUST 81, MM. Entered at the Post Olflee I.nPoite, Pa. as second class mail matter. UKI'K l.ir\> WNHKITMU. STATE. For Governor. GEN. D. 11. For Senator, FRANK 11. INGHAM. Laporte. Pa. (Subject to decision of Conference.) For President Judge, E. M. DUNHAM, Laporte, Pa. For Member, B. W. JENNINGS, Lopez, Pa. For Jury Commissioner, Z."E. KILMER. Shunk, Pa. Let all be harmony in the cam paign, this fall. With the Senator named our tick et will be complete. We will all be good friends after the campaign is over. So far as the REPUBLICAN is con cerned, this will not be a muddy campaign. Chemung county Republicans have declared for Fasset for governor of New York this year. The Democratic Congressional Conference will meet at Sunbury, on Tuesday, September 4th, at 2 p. m. Dunham was the choice of the Judicial Conference, now lets take off our coils and give him a hearty support. Ex-sheriff Utz of Dushore, is friendly to Worth Jennings, and says he will be our next Member. Mr. Utz is a good election guesser and his predictions can be relied upon. Our candidate for Congress, Mr. Monroe 11. Kulp of Northumberland county, is a farmer and a lumberman, hence knows their wants. Give him your support. No free wool on his dish. Congress adjourned on Tuesday. This congress has been the most ex pensive in the history of the United States and have done the least iu the way of legislation. All will be pler.se 1 to know that their salary has been cut otl. Every voter should examine the registry lists, and see that he is registered on or before Sept. Ist. The last day for the payment of State and County tax is Oct. oth., thirty days before the general election, which will occur Nov. 6th. During the present campaign, we shall use one column or more if the necessity demands it.for all political communications, and in this column will go all such matter regardless of length of article. We shall head it "Political Communications." This will be strictly adhered to. The bosses in the Democratic party look worried. They apprehend that the people's ticket is going to win. Our friends, the rank and file of the Democratic party, have, so they sa}', been hoodwinked as many times as they mean to be by the Losses of the Sullivan county De mocracy. The Democrats of Lycoming county met in convention on Tues day of last week and placed in nom ination the following ticket; For congress, Wm. 11. Halloway of Williamsport; senator, J. Henry Cochran, Williamsport; representa tives, H. 11. Rutter of Hughesville, Otto G. Kaupp, Williamsport and Walter E. Ritter, South Wmsport. The Dushore Gazette made the statement hist week, that John W Flynn, ml 1.. 11. Speaker, were the Congressional conferees, cho3cn in the Democratic convention on Tues day the 21st. This is a mistake It should I ave read—J. W. Flynn and A. L. Smith. The REPnnLICAN, though we were not present at the convention, gave it correctly. lion. I has. R. Buckalcw of Bloomsbur.", spent about three fourths of his time iu Sullivan Co. previous to the Democratic conven tion and by his maneuvers defeated P. Conner of Bernice fou. thenomi nation of Congress. As a result M' - . Connor an 1 Irs friends are not enthusiastic for Mr. I'uckalcw and should he receive the C > r eronce nomination, will he ci.t tight and left by the Con lor faction on the 6th of November. The result is lam more settled than ever in the determination to allow the hill to become a law without my signature. '•When the information ot legis lation which it was hoped would em body Democratic ideas to tariff re form was lately entered upon by Congress, nothing was further from my anticipation than a result which I could not promptly and enthusi astically endorse. '•lt is, therefore, with a feeling ol tiie utmos-t dissapointment that I submit to a denial of this privilege. Yours very truly, GROVER CLEVELAND. From I lie Philadelphia Inquirer. The Seventeenth Congressional District may be classed as doubtful. Columbia, Montour, Northumber land and Sullivan as a whole are solid enough usually—they gave 5303 in the Congressional contest of '92 —but. these are unusual times Indeed, these counties slumped tre mendously in February, ajid the coal county of Northumberland went heavily Republican—so heavily in fact, as to carry the whole dis trict for Gttow by J4B majority. It is not much of a margin, but th<' contest will not be allowed to lay and there is a fighting ehance--more than that—to capture Hie district for protection. Teachers' lCxuui i ual ionw. The regular teachers' examination for Sullivan county will occur as fol lows:—Col ley, at. Lopez, Sept . 10; Fox, at Sliunk. Sept 13; Klkl.md, at Estclla, Sept. 14; Forks, Hills-Grove, and Forksville, at Forksville, Sept. 15; Laporte Boro. and Township, at LiHpoi'le, Sept. 19; Davidson and Shrewsbury, at Muucy Valley, Sept. 20; Cherry and Dushore, at Du shore Sept. 22. Teachers are requested by law to attend the examination held for the district iu which they expect to teach; in case another examination is attended, permission from the direc tors must be obtained. All examinations will commence promptly at 9 o'clock and will be held in the public school building at each place. F. W. \IEYLEKT, CO. Supt. Laporte, Pa„ Aug. 27, 1891. JtSS TEL L.l JTE MS.
