THE REPUBLICAN. •w. M. CHENEY, - - - - Editor. FKIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1803. Entered lit the Post Office Lal'orte, Pa. as second class mail matter. BEMDCRATIO ifSE An Interenting and a Warm] Con vention. The Ticket-- FOP Treawur er, A. la. Smith) County Commii •loner*, Gabriel Eltielman, John H. Farrell; Coroner, Dr. Hill; Auditors, Morgan Orwitt, Irvlm D. Haverly. Sharp at 2 p. m. Tuesday a large body of Democracy sprinkled with Republicans of Sullivan county, as sembled in Garey's Hall in Dushore boro. to hear tue result of the con test for nominations by Democracy to the various offices. The interest "was mostly centered upon the Com missioner contest and many were the predictions thereon. The agony of the office seekers, was soon over, however, on the convening of the convention as the session was of short duration. E. J. Mullen, chairman of the Standing Committee, called the con vention to order, after which Hon. B. S. Collins of Dushore, was made chairman and upon taking his seat addressed the convention in a neat little speech. Bryan thanked the convention for the honor granted him of presiding over the first po litical convention held in the metrop olis of the county etc. Hon. lltissel Karns of Laporte and Michael McDonald, Ist of Cherry, were elected vice presidents and 0. E. Jackson of Bemice, secre tary and D. M. Taylor of Muncy Valley and George Musselman of Lopez, assistant secretaries. With the oflicers of the convention elect ed the calling of the roll of delegates •was next in order. Each precinct was represented by its quota of .standard bearers. The Colley repre sentatives, however, came in a trifle late, but they were recognized and their names placed on the list. A committee on resolutions was appointed by the chairman. They were as follows : E. J. Mullen, of Dushore ; R. D. Lancaster, Forks ville and Lorenz Pflager of Jami son City. The committee, reported praises to Grover Cleveland for the good Democratic times that we arc enjoying etc., etc. The resolutions of course, were adopted as read, but not vcrjr enthusiastically for which the majority of the Democrats pres ent are entitled to much credit. The boys know what good times are. They have lived under a Re publican administration and can't be fooled. They arc only getting 12 and 15 cents a pound for their wool to-day. Last year the}' got 30 cents a pound for it. The farm ers notice the difference. Well, with the resolutions read nomina tions were declared in order. The first on the list was a man to handle the county's cash box. R. D. Lancaster Esq., with a neat little speech nominated A. L. Smith of Forksville. The nomination of Mr. Smith was seconded by several dele gates. Mr. Pflager of Jaminson nominated J. H. Spencer of Laporte. Before a ballot was taken, however, i Mr. Spencer's name was withdrawn I and Mr. Smith was made the nominee by acclamation. The nomination of County Com missioners were next on the pro grame. They were nominated as follows: Gabriel Litzelman of Cherry; John H. Farrell of Du shore; Henry Ritchlin of Forks and Philip Secules, of Shrewsbury. The first attempt to take a ballot was a failure and the secretaries be gan over again. SECOND BALLOT. Litzelman 28 Farrell. llitchlin Seculci.. Litzelman receiving a majority of the votes cast was declared one of the nominees, THIRD BALLOT. Farrell 14 Kitchlin 13 Secules 18 Neither receiving a majority of the votes cast, hence no second choice as yet. FOURTH BALLOT. Farrell Kitchlin .Secules This ballot resulting the same as the third, hence no nomination made and Ritchlin, who received the smallest number of votes was drop ped from the list. FIFTH BALLOT. Farrell Secules This ended the battle and Litzel man of Cherry and Farrell of Du shore, were made the nominees of the convention. County Auditors were then nom inated as follows: Morgan Gavitt of Laporte town phip and Irvin D, Ilaveily of Forks twp. There being no opposition to these gentlemen, they were elected by acclamation. Dr. Hill of Laporte, was nominated by acclamation for Coroner. This ended the business of the day and the convention adjourned. NOTES. Hon. B. S. Collins made an ex cellent chairman. It is a one sided ticket, geo graphically speaking One hour's time did the business. Guess it was slated. Cherry says thumbs up. We did'nt notice any down, did you ? The Dushore people were proud of the gathering. It was their first. Those Colley delegates were some behind time, but they got Ihere all the same. Frank Gallagher started out to show Pflager the town. The thing was reversed before they got around. Ex Sheriff T Jtz was there in his shirt sleev es ready for business. John wij l . be a strong worker for the ticket. The Cherry and Dushore Demo •crats know how to look after their friends and they do it, too. The other fellows are not in it. There is some talk of a Demo cratic independent candidate for Commissioner. He will come from either Shrewsbury or Davidson twp. The credentials of the delegatus were handed the chairman of the standing committee before the con vention convened. A singular oc currence. Some say the new rules are good and others no. Cherry will decide the matter and to a man up a tree they look quite favorable for them. Guess they will remain on the cal endar. It was'nt all harmony. The dele gates of the western and southern precincts tu-e on their car about the Commissioneer nominees. They say Cherry swooped down upon it and took it all. It was said that Streby, the Gazette man had the resolutions in type on Monday night. It would havo been a joke on Snyder, had the conven tion refused to adopt them, and it had that appearance. A number of the boj-s said they were anxious for the news and sub scribed for the REPUBLICAN. They were as follows : Ambrose Farrell, Lopez John McGee, Dushore; Michael Quinn, Dushore; Lorenz Pflager, Jamison City ; John Pine, Dushore; Reuben Thrasher, Colley; William Walsh, Dushore; Thomas Gahen, Dushore. Rev. W. A. Lepley will preach In the M. E. church at Laporte next Sabbath at 11:30 a. m. m » ♦-« mm Miss Freddie Miller of N. Y. city, is visiting friends in town. ELKLAND ITEMS. The candidates for county com missioner, seem to have it so far, all their own way. When the delegates meet in convention they will doubt less have something to say about it, and we all want the best men nomin ated. So far we have heard of but one candidate for county auditor—Mr. M. E. Wilcox, who is a man of good education and well qualified for the position. People seem generally to be mind ing their own business and news are very scarce. Some one said last week that a lot of the young kids went to the lake. Whose kids, wc would like to know ? and who is raising goats in this town ? Will some one in form us. that we may have the guilty party lodged in jail. Mr. F. C. Bicnlich has peeled the last of his hemlock timber and ex pects to get a pile of logs to the I mill, this coming winter. Mr. Loren Johnson has gone to visit his father, who is quite ill at the Foot of the Plaine. George Baumnuk, the showman, is working for F. C. Bienlich. Mr. M. J.
