This i« the season when many people give their orders for reading matter for the coming year. In this connection we would call the atten tion of all to the unparalled offer made by the publisher of the REPUB XICAN. The offer is the REPUBLI CAN and New Yotk Tribune one year for the small sum of $1.25. This is the best newspaper combi nation ever made in Sullivan coun ty. The REPUBLICAN is by far the beat paper published in the county. Our subscription list has nearly doubled in the past six months and it continues to grow. This is good evidence that it is the leading paper of the county. The T/ibune needs no recom mend from us. It is an old estab lished paper well known to nettrly every one. It ranks among the very best city weeklies, having de partments for the familj-, the boys nnd girls, the fgrieulturist, the puzzle solver, and the. best digest of city markets of any paper published, When two such papers as these can be procured for tbe remarkable low price of $1.25 for a whole year, no one should be without reading. If you hav'ut a full supply of read ing for 1893 send the publisher of the REPUBLICAN $1.25 and try this combination. FIGHT AUAIWNT CROCKER. His Leadership ot Tammany Hall Will Be Strongly Conlchf ed by Disappointed Members. NEW YORK, Jan. 8 The fijht that has been brewing in Tamm. nv Hall for some months is rapidly reaching a focus, and it will be a short time only when Richard Crocker's leadership wl'.i be dis puted. Ample evidence is already at hand that the moment a break appears in the ranks there will be a rush to muster under the banner of the op position without regard to the form in which it maintains itself. Mayor Gilroy's administration promises to be one of great dash and brilliancy. Precedents are to be cast aside, great public improvements, like that of widening Elm street at a cost of three million dollars, will be order ed and carried out, as in the Tweed days, and the patient taxpayers will be called upon to foot the bill. Then the trouble may begin. Hitherto Mr. Crocker has been one of the most discreet of men, but now it would seem that he has cast discretion to the winds, as when issued his manifesto, declaring that he had no use for "business men' as such. The disappointment in mercantile circles when Mayor Gilroy an nounced his first batch of political appointon Wednesday «a< great. lif tt'all street and among banking pen the feeling was one of severe censure. Meanwhile the politicians, who were forgotten in the distribution of patronage, and who have been buoyed by the hope of securing a snug political berth, are now ready to fight. They are willing to throw off the mtsk of friendship at the instant the call to arms is made. With the appointments of John T. Scannell as Fire Commissioner the factional fight in Tammany Hall is intensified. Ex-Mayor Grant re peatedly refused to give Scannell an office, although urged to do so by Crocker. The fact that Mayor Glhoy yibkled to the Wishes of the Tammahy chieftiari indicate* that Grant and Martin fitft among the outs. Ex-Alderman Cavanfltlgk and others "like iiim who have l»een abuned by Crocker will gladly take part in any rebellion against his tyrannical decrees, and a Tammany inan of prominence who was ''lost in the shuffle" said yesterday : "There will be an open revolt in Tammany before the robins nest again. Grant and Martin will not calmly be turned down, and they will avenge the insult conveyed through the appointment of Scan aell." THE WORK OF THE MAFIA. A Country Storekeeper Gassed, Bl'udfoldcd and Robbed, and Held a Prisoner for Sev eral Days. NEW OHLEANS, Jan. 9.—On November 24, last year, Henry L. TOPEKA, Jan. 10.—The predicted clash between the Republicans and Populists of Kansas over the organi zation of the House has come, but in a totally unexpected manner The Populists made a bold bluff to exclude from participation all those members against, whom contest were pending. The Republicans would not listen to such a proposition which would mean the surrender of the House to the enemy, and the result is that two Houses are organized and are in full blast Bide by side in the same room. ' It has settled down to a case of freeze out and the side with the most endurance will win. The Executive Council of the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America have established recently 10 New York city a Tomperance Publication Bureau, and have ap pointed as its manager, the Rev. A. P. Doyle, 415 West Fifty-ninth Street. A monthly bulletin, 1 'emper ance I'ruth, will be sent out each month. Three numbers have al ready been issued, containing valu able articles by Rev. Walter Elliott, Archbishop Ireland, and Rev. J. M. Scanlan. Sent out to a widely extended Catholic constituency, the publications of this Bureau will do much to educate publio opinion, in very needy quarters, concerning the wisdom and duty of total ab stinence. ADDITIONAL LOCAL. Judge Ingham is confined to his room with sickness. Atty. P. T. Deinpsey has changed his location from Forksville to Dushore. Ex-Secretary Blaine is reported worse and hopes of his recovery is considered very doubtful. John Paulhamus of the firm of Lyon's lumber company, was trans acting busineus at the county seat, Tuesday. Mr. McFarlane is stocking the LaPorte saw mill with logs suitable in length for the railroad trestling across Loyal Bock, And now they say a woman ae well as a man can be seen in the moon. It's been suspected all along that there were two sides to this af fair. Threats to steal Jay Gould's body are still made to his family, but they are losing no sleep over them. [( somebody threatened his millions it might be different. A party of young people of La- Porte, contemplate taking a sleigh ride to Thomednle, to-night (Thurs day). While there they will enjoy a dance in the dinning room of the boarding bouse. A Dublin newspaper has an ad vertisement possibly more truthful than intended: "Wanted, a gentle man to undertake the Bale of a patent medicine. The advertiser guarantees that it will be profitable to the undertaker." Francis Lingo, the celebrated New Jersey colored man so orten accused of murder, is now a lectur er. There are many who think that Lingo ought to be able to give an interesting talk on the subject, "How to Cut a Woman's Throat," from experience. Ten girls in a composition class in a Cincinnati school were told by their teacher to write a telegram such as would be suitable to send home in case of a railroad accident while traveling. One of the girls wrote: "Dear papa: Mamma is killed. I am in the refreshment room." James Walsh fell in Lake Moko ma on Friday of last week. He was loading ice on his bob sleds at the time and unfortunately stepped in a hole. He caught on the edge of the ice and was rescued by his associates. The water was some twelve or fifteen feet deep where it happened and it was quite fortunate that help was so near by. Hon. John Kuhbach of Wayne oounty is at work on a bill to in crease the tax on dogs from fifty cents to two dollars. The tax is to go ipts the county treasury and will ba used for the payment of sheep claims. The cities and large towns in the state will probably op pose the bill, but the farmers who are interested in sheep culture will urge its passage. KallroAd Official* Elected.
