The Committee to take into consideration and re port at the next County Convention whether any change be necessary in the representation at our county conventions, is: JOHN N. CALIFF, J. 11. SHAW, GEORGE BROWN- 11. W. THOMAS, N. W. WALDRON, MILTON LOOMIS, C. L.FQVIRES High Heels. Among the many silly get-ups and fash ions of the present age—and they tire nu merous—none is more ridiculous or abominable than tlie rage for high heel shoes. This barbarous custom has run to such an extreme and resulted in so ninety suffering and poor health, especially spi nal affections, that the physicians are loudly and justly protesting against the dangerous practice. Ladies particularly are the great sufferers, but occasionally \ cases of men becoming invalids by this idiotic custom are reported. The idea of setting the heel up from li to 2 inches higher than is natural, wedging the toes into a tight narrow space, jocking the knees forward like a knee-sprung horse, kineking the back itnd in short destroy ing tbe equilibrium of tlie well-balanced and systematically formed physical structure, shows not only a total disre gard of tlie laws of health sud beauty, but also a lack of good sense. It is tire some, causes pains, weakens tlie system, paves Hie way for "many ailments and breaks down many a robust person. Vain mothers subject innocent children to this,, cruel torture, deforming feet and body and making wrecks of them in early life. Fashion is at the bottom of it. It is one of those abominable "French get-ups, of which we have entirely too much for our comfort or good. We are glad that the medical fraternity are awakened and combatting the evil and we hope parents seeing the alarming situation may act in the matter. If something is not done, it might be well to form a society in tlie in terest of those sufferers, get legislative enactments against the manufacture ot stilt like heels and a penalty lor making them. Attorney General Palmer lias secured otic victory in the legislative salary ques tion. The judges of Dauphin county have declared the law under which mem bers drew more than a thousand dollars, unconstitutional. The case will be car ried to the Supreme Court, but probably will not get before that tribunal until next spring. In the meantime tlie "boys" will have to get along without tlie covet ed .SSOO extra pay. In closing an exhaus tive opinion, the judges concluded : "We are, therefore, clearly of opinion that so much of the act of the eleventh of May, IST I, already cited, as pretends to give daily pay, in addition to a fixed sum, to members of the Legislature, is unconsti tutional and void. It would be unlaw ful for the State treasurer to pay it; this court cannot enforce payment by mandamus, and the same must be refused. We leave out of view every question of policy or expediency. Those are ques tions for tlie. Legislature alone, over which the judiciary has 110 control, and no right or disposition to pass judg ment." The St. Louis Globe-Democrat would not advocate anything so absurd as that passengers should be shipped "at so much per hundred pounds, as cattle and hogs are shipped," but its notion is that "if 200 pounds of beef or pork can be carried from the Mississippi to the sea board for 50cen ts, a man might be haul ed over the same distance for considera bly less than fifty times as much." What the Glqbe-Democrat wants to show is that a permanent reduction in rates would pay the trunk lines by increasing travel. In the meantime, while the com panies are thinking it over there are peo ple who have an indisputable and clearly marked rignt to claim the hog rate when they travel. A young lady of Johnstown, N. Y., while bathing' at Chautauqua Lake, 'had a novel experience. A snapping turtle caught her by the ear. Iler screams brought friends to her assistance, or she would certainly have been drowned; but the turtle's grip was like a bull dog's,and after his head had been cut oil* it took ten minutes to pry the jaws apart. It will take a good deal of the poetry out of bathing in Chautauqua Lake. Sharks at Long Branch and Coney Island and snap ping turtles at Chautahqua are not sooth ing to the nerves of timid bathers. Thirty thousand persons have petition ed the Georgia Legislature asking that the people of the State be allowed to vote on prohibition of the liquor traffic. The petition was (100 feet long, and hadnames fro 1 n cve ry county. Business Cards. ALVORD & SON, JOB Fit IN TEES, DAILY REVIEW OFFICE, Main street, Towanila fa CIIAS. K. LAI)]), I\L D.
