He was born in Vermouut, came to Troy, this county about 1810 and was a soldier of the war of 1812. A gentleman who was in Dushore the oth er day informs us that men employed in tak" ing down a portion of the old Faireliilds'tav ern in that village, found nearly two hun dred dollars in gold concealed under a stone beneath the fire-place. The treasure had cv. , idently been there a long time. By intelligence received from the Warner Observatory, Rochester, N. Y., it appears that still another comet has just been dis covered by Dr. GOULD, Director of the Cor dova Observatory, Argentine Republic, South America. This comet seems to be the great comet of 1807, and is located in the Constel lation of the Dove, Right Ascenion 6 hours and Declination South 30 degrees. It is not visible from this latitude and not known yet that it will be, although it is likely to be as the comet of 1807 was distinctly seen. No apprehension need be had over the unusual appearance of comets during the present year as they do not possess the power to work injury upon the earth or any other planet. Second Assistant Postmaster-General RICH ARD A. ELMER celebrated the eleventh an niversary of his wedding and also his birth day on Thursday evening last by a quiet din ner at the Arlington, at which the postmaster general and Mrs. JAMES, Dr. J. 11. BAXTER, of the Army, and wife, Mrs. 11. G. PEARSON, wife of the postmaster at New York, and JOHN It. VANWORMER were present. The table was set in one of the front parlors of the old Johnson mansion, and was beautifully and tastefully appointed, the flowers attract ing special attention by reason of their pro fusion and rareness. A beautiful centre piece was contributed by Mr. ROBERT A. PACKER, of Sayre, Pa., one of Gen. ELMER'S personal friends and business partners in railroad enterprises.— Washington Sunday Herald. HONORING SUPERINTENDENT THOMAS.— The people of Port Jervis tendered BENJ. F. THOMAS, the newly appointed Assistant Gen eral Superintendent of the Erie road a sere nade on Saturday evening last. An account of the interesting event occupies nearly two eoluinhs in the Port Jervis Union. That pa per says one boquet presented by a gentleman of the place, contained 31 varieties of roses, so arranged as to beautifully represent the rice of Mr. THOMAS in bis Held of labor, from telegraph operator to train dispatcher, theuee to the superintendent!}' of the Dela ware division, and finally to the assistant sti pe rintendency of the entire road. The idea was as poetical and appropriate as the boquet was lovely and fragrant. The Erie operators sent in handsome floral tributes which were placed in conspicuous places. Hon. E. L. CARII delivered an address ex pressing the high esteem in which Mr. THOM AS and his wife arc held in Port Jervis, where they have long resided. The Super intendent responded in a brief speech, re turning thanks for the many kindnesses ex tended o himself and family. A'.thoungh Mr. THOMAS left Towanda while a mere boy, be lias many friends here who take a lively mterest in his welfare and sincereiy rejoice over his success. "A traveler by the Lebigb Valley road plunges into magnificent revelations of grand ure almost from the start. The rare beauty of the Wyoming Valley has been embalmed in history, has been chanted by the poet and has been transferred to canvass by the artis*. But neither the trailing pen of the historian, the dreamy interpretations of the muse, nor the bright brush of the painter, have ever reached the climax of rapture, the true height of magic, surprise : nd glorious revelations 'hat are unfolded from the car window of the road that twines upwards around and r along the 'glorious mountains that flank Wilkes- Barre upon the east. Whether seen at morn • ing when the sun is just sending his golden beams over the vast expense of wood, field, river and hill, or at noon when the whole broad picture lies like a dream under, won dcringe yes, or whether lie gaze at- it in Jtlie calm hour of twilight, when tin; sloping shadows break in between the long dashes of sunlight, it is ever grand, beautiful and en chant ing.''
