What the people of the country want the President to do with respect to the federal ollices in New York, is not to pun ish Mr. Conkling's friends or to reward them; but to put into each office, without regard to his frendship or hatreds, the man who is most capable of conducting the business of the office with efficiency and honesty. The offices do not exist for the benefit of one faction 01 another, and any use of them for factious purpos es is an outrage upon the people. If Judge Robtrtson shall employ the New York Custom House as a machine for striking at Conkling, he will deserve no greater favor than Conkling has received. The Nation wants to have that Custom House and every other custom house tak en clear out or politics, and President- Garfield will bitterly disappoint his best friends and seriously injure the Republi can party if he does not compel such a refoim. The Post's Washington says: "It is reported that the President, at his con ferences at Long Branch with the mem bers of his Cabinet, has been taking into consideration the Senatorial situation 111 New York, and it is ins wish that the Legislature shall elect two Senators be fore the adjournment, whether they are Stalwarts or Half-Breeds, providing they arc not the Senators who resigned. The visit of Representative Hiscock there yes terday was mysterious. It is believed that he was closeted with Secretary Blaine, and that his trip had reference to the situation in Albany." The marrow of the Indian question was laid bare by the sharp mental tomahawk of a young Creek Indian at Carlisle, Pa., the other day, when he stood up before an audience of American citizen—himself denied citizenship—aud said : "The ed ucation which we are getting here is not like our land —it is something which can not be stolen nor bought from us." A keener rebuke luts never been uttered in the English language. It embodies the his tory of a century of wrongs aud recogni zes the only repartatiou that remains— education, citizenship. The managers of the English branch of the American manufacturing company which offered the prizes for the interna tional boating contest last year, propose through the London Sportsman to give £IOO to furnish a cup, to be called the In ternational Challenge Clip, to be contend ed for at Ilenley, or elsewhere on the Thames, at the earliest practical date, the cup to become the property of the win ners. James Robinson, aged seventy, county treasurer of Staten Island, was in New York Thursday to deposit SIO,OOO of pub lic money. Three conlldence men accost ed him in succession. The old man knocked the last rascal into the gutter, amid the cheers of the crowd, and was molested 110 longer. The Supreme Court has decided~~tliat taxpayers have a right to work out their road tax, and the Supervisors have 110 right to a percentage on the taxes so worked. The probable retirement of Gen. Sher man is being discussed in legal aud mili tary circles. The General claims there is 110 provision in law for the retirement of a general or a lieutenant-general. Clucago dispatches say it is reported that Vauderbilt took a large quantity of the grain at ten cents, reported on Wed nesday, in order to tie up their cars and advance rates on his lines. A Pottsville physician charged thejcor inor of the county twenty-fire dollars for performing a post-mortem examination. The corinor would allow only ten dollars, and a jury sustained him. The census just taken in Great Britain and Ireland, will show a population above 35,000,000, an increase in the last decade of over 4,000,000. The assessors of Rrooklyn are taxing all parsonages of churches, and the reve nues of the city will be increased several hundred thousand dollars thereby. Riot out Christianity and the world wil not only be lost in darkness and sin, but homes will be wrecked, humanity brought to dispair and ruin. One bad example spoils many good pre cepts.
