CORNELL, of Columbia, takes his place next week as Supernintendent of the Poor lloHse in place of A. D. MUNN, whose health will not permit him longer to continue the duties he has so well performed for the past year. MR. CORNELL is an excellent selection for the place and the duties of the place will undoubtedly he discharged to the satisfaction of the public. A careful, thoughtful man he has shown in the manage ment of his own affuirs that he is fitted to be entrusted with these of the public. We clip the above from last week's North- Crn Tier Gazette , and while we fully en , dorse all that is said of the new appointee, we sincerely regret that Mr. MUNN could not have been induced to remain in charge of the Poor House, as he possesses in an emiuent degree qualities requisite for the position. ALMOST A FIRE. —Yesterday at the close of the morning service at the churches, people were seen hurrying in the direction of Easta brook's block. Investigation disclosed the fact that a fire had started on the third floor in the G. A. R. hall. It was discovered and r.n alarm given which promptly brought the fire companv with engine aud hose carts, but be-, fore they could get in position the flames weie subdued by the application of a few pails of water. The fire had burned a box contain ing sawdust, which was used for a spittoon, and a hole through the floor told the story of its origin. A short time longer and the flames would have spread between floor and ceiling and over the building. Fortunately but little damage was done and the crowd dis. persed very soon. The Post met on Saturday night and the janitor had not looked after the "old sojors" as he should, if they were to be thrown into such a tinder box. WILL. Athens, April 4. Nothing like the Comedy and American Four consolidated variety show which has boen crowding the Buckingham to the ut most during the pa.st week has been seen here this season. The combination gives as good, if not better, show than Tony Pastor brings with him. The bill played throughout ia one continuation of good things. The combina tion opened Monday night to the largest house ever seen in the theatre; many being unable to gain admission. The bill opened with a roaring sketch with Joe Pettingilll as the negro. The olio was opened by the Par ker Sisters, the most refined lady song-and dauce artistes living, peorgie Parker is sim ply too beautiful and petite for anything. Andy Gollons' banjo act brought him four or five encores nightly. He has no equal. Mur phy and Mack's Irish sketch is a screamer.— The American four simply break up 'be house every night. Miss Carrie Howard is one of the best serio-comics on the American stage. In short the entire bill is a repetition of good things and must be seen to be appre ciated. — Louisville Argus, Jan. 10,1881.
