Country Papers. We wish all vho ore in the habit of taking city papers in preference to these publi.-bed in their own county! to read what Sartam's Maga zine says about country papers: In nothing lias there U rn a mure marked change 'within the last .en ye:.rs. than in tli ileWtion in the thiivacto: of tl'te country press. Since the general establishment oT the tciofrmi h they arc enabled to anticipate the great city pa j.crs i'ii the early publication of the latest news tkroueh the interior; and with the increased importance which this gives to their issues, they have acquired a corresponding degree of energy and efficiency in the promotion of all liberal and patriotic undertakings. Governor Dorr. One of the first acts of the Democratic Legis lature of Rhode Island, now in session, was to restore Governor Thomas W. Dorr to the rights tf citizenship, from whicli he had been for sev eral years unjustly excluded by the Whig party. Salutes were fired in Providence in honor of his restoration. His friends were much rejoiced 4it this tardy act of justice, delayed, as it has been, for so many years. President riilmorc. Washington, May 12. President Fillmore, Hon. D. Webster, Mr. Conrad, Mr. Graham, Mr. Crittenden, and Mr. Hall, left this city at seven o'clock A. M. for Baltimore, on their way to New York, to attend the opening of the New York and Erie Railroad on Wednesday next. Baltimore, May 12. The President and his travelling companions arrived here by Railroad from Washington city at eight o'clock this morning. They were enthusiastically received at the outer depot. Philadelphia, May 12. The President arri- ed in thi9 city about four o'clock P. M. He was most enthusiastically cheered. Mr. Webster attracted, if any thing, more utteution than the President, and was most graciously received throughout the whole pro cession. The day was very pleasant, and the military made a grand display, though few in number. M a s i" fa ct r r. e of IitF.ciors Gems. M. Ebcl nieu, the very distinguised mineralogist, director of the national porcelain manufactory of Sevres, France, has succeeded in producing crystalized minerals, resembling very closely those produ ced by nature? chieHy precious and rare stones employed by jewellers. To obtain this result, he has dissolved in boric acid of alum, zinc magnesia oxides of iron, and chrome," and then subjecting the solution to evaporation during three days, he has obtained crystals of a min eral substance, equalling in hardness, and in clearness and in beauty of color, the natural .stones. With chrome, M. E. has made most brilliant rubies, from two to three millimetres in length and about as thick as a grain of corn. This gentleman, the successor at Sevres of the illustrious Brogniart, has already connected W.s name with some remarkable improvements which have lately distinguised famous estab lishments, and he is universally designated fur the vacant place soon to be filled in the Acade my of iSfltirrices, section of mineralugy. X-3LI"ist week the auditing and land depart ments passed into Ok; hands of officers elected by the people Hon. Ephraim Banks, Auditor General, and Hon. J. P. Rrawley, Surveyor General. The late incumbents were appointed by Governor Shunk, and retire, after a service of six years, universally esteemed for upright ness, capacity and unremitting diligence in the discharge of their respective duties. Geu. Pur viance has returned to Butler, and will resume the practice of the law among his old friends and neighbors. Judge Laporte, we understand, retires to his farm in Bradford county. Both, we trust, may enjoy many years of health and usefulness. Keystone. Visit of Gov. Ramsy. Gov.
