Israel FARM NOTES. rsRVANENT rASTCKES.-Xam"jerl with the many excellent papers read at the New Yoik institute's meetings this winter was one by 41 r. Gold, of Con necticut, on "Treatment or Termaiient Pastures. "' In this paper Mr. Gold, called attention fo the important fact that the way in which pastures are fed, whether closely or otherwise, has much to do with their permanence in ralue. It is possible to feed a pasture so closely as to dwarf the grass roots and kill the large (trowing s'cies. Too light stock ing faTors the growth of the coarse and useless vegetation, choking out sweeter and richer grasses- Dairy cows, unless fed some grain. Impoverish pasture more than young stock or fattening animal?. The fields are apt to be too Hush in June aud too bare in August. Itather than these extremes, feed some grain or sowed corn in the scant season and do not allow pastures to run into seed in June. Tasture is often benefi ted by a change of the live stock kept upon it. tsheep will eat and destroy the white daisy and wild carrot. The tread of sheep has a marvellous influ ence on the physical condition cf cer tain light lands. Horses may be proQL ble changed around with cattle, con suming much rank growth that is re fused by neat stock. Young cattle may be advantageously pastured in con nection with dairy cows which have a habit of spending their time about the entrance to the pasture. It is well to have trees in the more elevated parts, thus encouraging the animals to leave their droppings where they are most ueeded. For a real permanent pasture we must cherish aud retain tle very best grasses that are fitted to the soil, the climate ami the treatment our pastures receive. Sometimes ploughing and re seeding Is the only resort. But consider other remedies first. Cut the bushes, trees, and destroy such weeds as can lie banished without ploughing. Dram and irrigate. Dress with bone or ashes, aud do not expect very sudden improvement. How to Construct Fulit Ke fuigekatok IIocses. The principal features of the rruit refrigerating houses, omsist of an Ice-box arranged above, in the centre, aud along the en tire length of the fruit room below. The Ire-box, which is usually four feet wide, haa on one side an opening in Its Isittonj. This opeuimr is four or live inches wide, and extends down through the floor. A slide door iu the opposite side of the ceiling of the store-room al lows the warm air to rise through a tight passage and over a slatted arrange ment containing the ice in the box. Thus is created a current of air from the room below, where the fruit is stored, up to and over the ice. These houses have several rooms with ice boxes arranged over each, aud the Ice house is In one end of the building convenient to the Ice-boxes. A Useful Tidt. An effective and jseful tidy, covering the entire back of the chair, is made of ecru canvas. In the centre the threads are drawn longi tudinally to the width of two Inches and a half, and are finished at the sides with feather stitch in gold silk. A piece of dark green rlblion is run through the beads at regular intervals. The threads on the upper side of the ribbon are caught by a single thread fiom the top to the bottom. On either side this centre are alternate stripes of plain canvas about an inch and a half wide. The first strip has a herring bone or feather stitch de sign in pink silk on the canvas; the next sliip is drawn canvas, edged with pale blue feather stitch, a piece of pink ribbon running through the drawn work; then a strip of canvas has a herringbone ofjellow si'.k; then there is a strip of drawn canvas, edged with pink silk, through which pale bine ribbon is run. The outer edges aie of plain canvas worked in feather stitch with blue and cardinal floss silk. The top and bottom of the tidy are fringed. for a sitting room or bed-chamber this will be found very serviceable and pretty, and it re quites far less time than ordinary en-broidery. The bjlsters are set on blocks, to bring the platform ibove the wheels, .'standards are set in the sides and ends of the plat tor rn. The wheels shoul 1 be wider apart than I he tread or the wagons used; for as their tires aie four or five inches wide, unless threshing-machine wheels are used, they should not run in t!ie wagon Irack.
