Bale Bills printed on short notice at the omce of the Sentntl and Rtfublicau' Letter from Iowa. fcas MorsEs, Iowa, Kay 17, 1877. . Editor Sentinel and Republican, : Dear Sir Thinking that a letter from this Vicinity would be or interest to some bf your readers, 1 take the liberty of addressing you. I have been in this place four day a, and have gained a lit tle information of tbe city: ' . DB8 MOINES ' " , is about the site of Laucaster not any larger but, I think, better built in its business portions, and therefore pre sents quite city-like appearance. All kinds of bustoew is represented, and overdone to a great extent. Business is very dull, and people are doing their full seere of growling and fault finding. This is no plaoe for tbe laboring man ; there are hundreds ont of employment now, and ft is expected there will be many more. Bat still they eome from tbe east and are now going to the Black Hills in great numbers. At one town there were at least five hundred wait ing for transportation, and others com ing on every train. I have heard it estimated that as high as one hundred thousand people would be there before Angust, 1877. If such is the case, seventy-five per cent, will not hsve money enough to get borne With. Den ver bas sent about fifteen hundred of her inhabitants to the Hills. The soil here is a blaok loam, being in places seven or eight feet deep, and very productive. Corn is the staple crop. I have seen but one field of wheat since I eame into the State, and that was not looking wall. 4 Tbe best wheat I saw was in Mifflin and Juniata counties, Peona. GRASSHOPPERS. - There is some fear of the grasshop pers being bad here. I was told by a gentleman that when he plowed a piece of ground it looked as though it had been sown with rice it was so full of eggs. A gentleman from Colorado says : 'The grasshoppers are worse now . than ever before. ' Millions are hatched out on she plains, and are about tbe size of a common house-fly. Tbe farm ers her thiok tbey will, however, be able toiaise a crop this year, by killing the grass-hoppers. Tbey propose to do it in this manner : ileretofoie tbey hsve floated tbem off by driving them into tbe irrigating ditches, but this did not kill tbem. Tbey now propose to pnt coal oil or tar into the ditches, and then drie them in and fire it. ' This method has proved successful in two or three Instances." If the 'hoppers destroy tbe grating and crops this year, the Sute will suffer terribly." ' " , ; SCHOOLS. The school houses' of Iowa 'have ex erted a potent influence In determining the character aud reputation of her people. Tbey are a prominent, visible judication of their love of intelligence aud culture. '.Their . rapid multiplica tion and rapid improvement have not only marked the accumulation of wealth wbicb has made tbe necessarily large outlay for ' tbe purpose possible, bnt have also marked the libirahty of her people, in contributing so largely of their early earnings for pubiie good and for tbe benefit pf those who are- to follow' them. Mr. Editor: Sir, We had quite an interesting game bf base ball here to day, with the Eagle base ball club of your town.1 Me bad understood that they bad been practicing all forenoon before the arrival of tbe train. We were all waiting at the depot for their arrival, tod about tbe time tb train was due we became , very nneasy ; . it would sot eome ; but alter a while the mighty iron horse came thundering along and brought the Eagles along. Taken all in all, it was etinugb to scare such innocent lambs like ua. We feared we would ali be eaptured and carried off to some high cliff, where we would be torn to pieces, or at least have onr eyes plucked out. But we proceeded to the psrk and made all tbe arrange ment for the game) with Prof.' II. C. MoCletlan as eatober and expert, and Deen as pitcher. As tbe game pro gressed, Prof. McC. caogbt one in the eye, and be made two or three somer saalts and tben stood on his head a short time, when Prof. Pannebaker No, 2 came to bis relief, and tben it ' went to tbe close of tbe game, which ended in our defeat. . Tbe Eagles are a whole-souled set of fellows. ' McClellan, Dean and Panne baker are fine players ; they understand all the technical -points. I forgot to mention a young man 1 thick they call him booaall who bats a ball well. It always lights again when he strikes it. Tbe rest are such oomnion players that I Lardly think tbem worthy of notice. They must take more time to practioe if they Want a promiaent notice in our next eommnnication.
