Mr Euitor : As the anniversary of the bombardment of Fort Sumpter April 13, 1801 is near at hand, it may serve to freshen our minds in Amer ican History to lecall some of the scenes and incidents of that memorable time. Some peop!e ask us to forget these things and never mention them. Is it either possible or desirable to do so As well might we expect to forget the war of '7C that gained us a nation, as to forget the war of '61 that pre served us the same. Perhaps many don't want to remember the Rebellion because the part they took therein is not plessant to recall. The Southern people don't forget the " great war in which they were overcome by superior forces" not conquered ." W by shou Id we, to whom the victory was so satis factory ! On the 26th day of December, I860, Maj. Robert Anderson removed from Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island and transferred tbe garrision nnder bis com mand to Fort Sumpter in tbe Bay. Be fore be left MonUtie he spiked the guns and burned tbe carriages. This was done, no doubt, as s precautionary measure against the threatening state of affairs just at that time. Tbe South bad been secretly arming for some time, and their movements around tbe harbor of Charleston betokened an outbreak. Tbis act on tbe part of Msj. Anderson, we are told, greatly ineensed tbe South ern people and made them more bold and defiant. Accordingly, the next day after tbe occupation of Fort Sump ter, Castle Pinekney and Fort Moultrie aud tbe batteries along the shore were occupied by rebel voluuteers. Things remained quiet until the 9tb day of January, 1861, when the steam er "Star of the West" entered the har bor with supplies and reinforcements for Sumpter. Tbis steamer was doing Government duty, with no infection of doing irjury to the person, property or right of any one. But she was fired upon. A man whom they call Mai. Stephens, with a party of cadets, had i uirruruH. iin m ririf ns aaoAva nai- U ... f . , bee wa,cLlnS il D'C"- About day ngnt on me morning oi I be ytb tbe steamer appeared at the entrance of the Bay. Tbe battery on Morris Island opened fire. The steamer immediately ran aloft the Stirs and Stripes, but shot after shot was poured in npon the defenceless vessel. In additiou to tbis a cutter, in tow of a steamer was about to open fire, and soon the guns on Fort Moultrie would be io range. Seeing these things the Star bt tbe West" wisely turned ber bead seaward and re tired from the exciting scene. This vretcry, as the rebels were pleased to term it, caused a great ex citement aud joy among tbe Southern people. However Lard it bad been beretofore to convince the cation that we were on tbe eve of civil war, it was inevitable. Both sections were busy. Ships of war aud provisions were made ready at New York, fresi- - dent Lincoln sent a special messenger q1iT to tiov. 1'ickcns, of South Carolina, and Gen. Beauregard that Sumpter was to be supplied with provisions by force. I auregard to j Hearing this, the rebel S War, Waiker, ordered Beauregard use all tbe means in bis power to frus trate these plans. Accordingly, at 12 o'clock on the 11th of April Gen. Beauregard made a i f0lUi demand for the surrender of the r t tort lie was determined cither to have tbe fort or batter it down before reiuforcemeuts should come. The reply of Maj. Anderson indicated tbe man brave aud loyal to the last, " 1 have the bonor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication demanding the evacuation of this fort, and to say in reply thereto, that it is a demand with which my sense of honor and my obli gations to my government, prevent my conipliauee." Oo tbis same day (11th) Beauregard received the following telegram from bis Secretary of War : M We do not de sire needlessly to bombard Fort Sump ter, if Maj. Anderson will state tie time at wbicb, as indicated by him, be will evacuate, and agree that, in the meantime, be will not use his guns against us, unless ours should be used sgainst Fort Sumpter. You are thus to avoid the effusion of blood. If this or its equivalent be refused, reduce thi fort as your judgment decides to be' the most practicable." , ' Mai. Anderson, of course, refused to ; leave tbe fort until be was compelled to do so, and Gen. Beauregard commenced preparations to batter down tbe grim old sentry in the liay. But for fear I weary you with a long story, 1 must leave for a future letter a description of the scenes that took place in our harbor en the 13ih of April, 1801. Atlantic. CaatrsTOX, S.
