BBCCKJ LEWISBURG CHRONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. JAN. 15, 1858. LOVE AND PHYSIC A clever man was Diktob Diuu, Miatortunes well be bore ; He never I oil his patience, (ill He had no patients more ; And, though his practice once was large. It did uot swell his gams. The pains he labored for were but Trie labor of ln pains. Though ' Ail is long," Ins rash g..l slum And well nuzhl Galen drrad it. Tor who will trust a name unknown When merii gets nu credit ! To marry seemed the only way To ease his mind of trouble, Mitlorluues never "singly" come. And misery makes thciu "double." lie had a patient, rich and f.iir. That hearts by scores was breaking, And, as he once bad felt her wrist. He thought her hai.d of taking; But lirsl what law makes strangers do, Did strike his comprehension Who join in these -United States" Do lirsl declare "intention." And so he called his beating heart Wiib anxious fears was swelling And, half lu habit, took her hand, . And on her tongue was dwelling ; But thrice, though he essayed to speak, He slopped, and stuck, and blundered ; For, say, what mortal could be cool Whose poise was 'must a hundred ? " Madame !" at last he falters out His love had grown courageous 1 have discerned a new complaint, I hope to prove contagious ; And wlirii the symptoms I relate. And prove its diagnosis. Ah ! let . te hope, Irom those dcarjips, Some favorable prognosis. This doue," he cries, -.let's tie those lies Which none but death can sever ; Since dike cures like,' I do infer " Thai love cures love for ever." H paused she blushed, however strange It seems on lirsl perusal, Although there was no raaaiss made. She gave him a, "refusal." I can not marry one who lives By other folks' distresses The man I marry I must love, Xor tear bis fond caresses ; For who, of raau or woman kind. However strange the case is. Would like to have a doctor's bill Stuck up into their facet T Perhaps you think, 'twin loe and rage tie look some aeamy pouun. Or, with his lancet, breathed a vein To ease bis pulse's motion. To guess the vent vL his despair. The wisest ones might miss it ; He reached his Office then and there His tHmi.ii Ben vub the "visit!" A 31 any-Horned Dilemma. n c j could Dot but be amused at tbe centrali- j ling efforts of a tuau on Main street, tbe . other uigUt. Ha had been to eome groce-1 ry, and was walking along the pavement j with a cabbage under each arm, some po- j tatoes in the bosom of bu shirt, a beef j steak in oue band, and two pullets in the other, besides a "brick" or two in his hat. j Here his troubles commenced. He drop- j ped one cabbage ; stopped to pick it up ; ; spilled bis potatoes ; laid down the steak I and chickens : nut the potatoes in bis ! pockets ; the cabbage in bis bosom ; meanwhile one chicken traveled off; laid the cabbages down, and started in hot pur suit of tbe truant chicken ; caught it ; found chicken No. 2 bad taken leg bail ; wedged chicken No. 1 between the two cabbages and a stone, and made after No. '1 ; captured it, and when we left was. try iug to arrange matters for convenience of carriagc,to the in6nite amusement of quite a crowd of lookers-on. A Good Story. (Tbe Tarts corres pondent of tbe Button Traveler tells the following :) A speculator on Change lost fifty shares of fancy stock which was worth ten francs a share. He offered a reward of a hundred francs for them, and stated, in Lis advertisement, that be bid forgotten tbe numbers. Before bis advertisement could appear in tbe papers, the stock tum Ikd doxtn one franc a thare. At nine o' clock, a long gveue of "honest men" be sieged his door, each having in bis posses sion fifty shares of the fancy stock, and each claiming the promised reward of a hundred francs. As time wore on, tbe crowd increased. The loser at last vowed that he had received his lost shares, tbrougb tbe post tfficc, from a conscience stricken thief, and tbe crowd retired, greatly dis appointed. Defining Democracy. The N.Y.Ary Book, the most decided Buchanan paper in New York City, hastho boldness to pro claim what arc tbe real doctrines of the party. Indorsing tbo Washington L'niun, it says : "Negro subordination, or so called sla very, is tbo basis, the foundation, the corner stone of our republican edifice,' and tbe time bas come when this must be openly avowed and boldly proclaimed as the distinctive badge of Democracy !" The Oi-EN Countenance. Somebody who does not think always as tbe books teach, or as the world believes, says of an open countenance : "It is not always a mark of frankness to possess an open coun tenance. An alligator is a deceitful crea ture, and yet be has an open countenance when iu tbe very act of taking you in." A writer in a late London periodical states that nearly all clergymen, between two and three hundred years ago, wore tbe moustache. Aud they wore some other things, which our dandies would be asha med to wear until fashion should dictate it. John Randolph used to say that John Quincy Adams was serving out tbe other four years of bis father's term. Buchan an is serving out the other four years of Tierce's term in the same way. An English writer says, in his advice to young married womcn, that their mother Eve married a gardener. It might be added that tbe gardener, in consequence of bis match, lost his situation.
