Love, Girtsrs, and Sausages. A Gfcll.MAS BTOBY. About a hundred jears ngo, a young la dy, of Uuterdam, named WilLclmina TcrecLcllii.'g, was riding on liorsebaci through the village of Doxmecr, when her lmrec became frightened and ran away with her. The joang man who accompa nied Iht, aud to whom she was betrothed, cried out that he would give a hundred .iaeats to any ono that would atop the horse. The young villagers, who wars paying ball upon tho green uear by, seeing a wo mau in danger, threw themselves before hc furious animal. One of them was throwu down and wounded ; two others received contusions; the horse fell, aud the Leauiiful Wilhelmina rolled in the dust. A young man who was pas.ing threw im mediately Lis cloak orer the lady, before any one bad time to perceive a finely turn ed leg and a pretty girter. Mademoiselle Tcrschelling, on being eirried borne, had time to reflect, and the result i.f her reflection was, that there must never be two men in the world that bad seen her garter. She scLt for ber be trothed, and said, "Will you kill the man who threw bis cloak over roe ?" " Who, I ? What an enormity I" " I thought yon would refuse. Then I rhal taarry him. When my life was in danger you offered one hundred ducats to navo me. This is tho price you but upon joy hand. Here are twenty-five hundred. You have made a good barjain." She then sent for the ptrangcr. "Mon sieur," said she, '-I am rich and young, and (she blushing prodigoiusly while add ing one of those hypocritical parr.phra.ses by which women ppcak of their beauty) I am not considered repulsive. I wish to lnarry immediately. I see that you are surprised. I will be frank with yo'i. I Lave sent for you because you have seen my garter. You have rendered me great service, Monsieur. Without you all the young men of Boxmecr would bave seen it, and, as I could not have married them all, I should have killed myself. But if you are uot free, or I am not so happy a. to please you, I shall give my Land and my fortune to a man who will kill you. Io you accept, yes ir no!" Yes, a thousand times yes, a hundred thousand times yes." The marriage took place, and was like all ether marriages probably ; we have no particulars on the subject. All the young men of Hoxrceer were invited to tho nup tials and sumptuously feasted. At her death, which took place in the course of time, tho following codicil was found to her will : " My farm situated on tho borders of tic Meuse will remain for ever, whoever may be the proprietor of it, subject to the following conditions, every year, under pe nilty of forfeiture. On the thirteenth of May, tables shall be prepared, and a tun if Strang beer and tweuty ells of the best sausages in Rotterdam shall be served to the young men of Boxmecx, as a token of gratitude that they saved my life, and of lcj dicing that they did not see iuy garter the 13th May. 1755." Until the present time, that is, during a hundred years, the wishes of the testa trix, havo been punctually executed. But the present Leir, on the 13th of last May, attempted to elude them. Under pretext of conforming 'o decimal system, bo gave tweiriy metres of sausages instead of twen ty ells, which made a difference of four metres to the detriment of the youth of lioxmeer. Not to lose the fete, they devoured the twenty metres, "under protest," but this year they bave brought a suit against the h'.ir, and demand that the case shall be decided befure the 13th of May next.
