drag racing late Saturday night on
the 600 block of East College Avenue,
State College Bureau of Police Serv
ices said. Jeffrey Ryver, 17, of Belle
fonte, and Charles Zendt, 17, of Port
Matilda, were cited for speeding and
drag racing. Police said Ryver s ve
hicle was clocked at 86 mph and
Zendt's at 68 mph.
• A car was struck in a hit-and-run
accident while in Parking Lot Red G.
Joseph Delahout, 418 Sylvan Drive,
reported yesterday, University Po
lice Services said. No damage esti
mate was available.
• Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, 321
E. Fairmount Ave., was reported
broken into on the morning of
Nov. 26, State College Bureau of Po
lice Services said. Police said an
unlocked window was entered, but
nothing was reported missing.

Professor to speak on realist fiction
Lillian R. Furst will speak on “Reading Realist Fiction" at 8
tonight in 101 Kern. Furst, a professor of comparative literature at
the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will discuss Balzac,
George Eliot and other writers. The lecture will also focus on
Gombrich’s Art and Illusion and on the works of aestheticians who
show how people “pretend belief."
Furst has been a Guggenheim fellow and is the author of seven
books including European Romanticism: Self Definition and Fic
tions of Romantic Irony. The lecture is sponsored by the Institute
for the Arts and Humanistic Studies, the Department of Compara
tive Literature and the Department of German.

Job market looks good despite crash
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -
The job outlook for college graduates
is good despite the recent stock mar
ket crash, according to a Michigan
State University recruiting survey.
Employers questioned after the
crash said they plan to hire 3.8 per
cent more college graduates this
year, with starting salaries for grad
uates with a bachelor's degree aver
aging $22,600, the survey by
placement services at Michigan State
found. That was down from 5.5 per
cent before the crash.

contributions totaling $3,048,367 thus
far and have spent $3,014,449. accord

graduates top out the list of highest
starting salaries, followed by indus
trial and civil engineering majors.
The lowest starting salary of $16,600
goes to geology majors.
• The greatest increase in demand
will be for graduates majoring in
hotel, restaurant and institution man
agement. up 4.3 percent from a vear
ago.
• Demand is also stronger for
graduates with degrees in marketing,
geology, accounting and electrical
engineering.
It said no injuries or deaths were
reported and the travelers were
moved to towns where they were
provided with coal, food, clothing and
accommodation.
The report did not say if any for
