2—The Daily Collegian Monday, Nov. 30, 1987 Democrats unsure of party nominee for 1988 election By RICHARD L. VERNACI Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON, D C. - The over whelming majority of Democratic leaders who are automatic delegates to next summer’s national convention have no clear idea who they want as the party’s 1988 presidential nominee, according to the campaign season’s first Associated Press delegate sur vey. Democratic delegates who are un committed 278 outnumber those with an early candidate preference by nearly 4-1. The leader among the candidates, Massachusetts Gov. Mi chael Dukakis, has lined up just 23 delegates who will cast 22.5 votes at the convention. To gauge the extent of candidate support two months before the first 1988 presidential caucus, the Asso ciated Press interviewed 354 of the 416 Democratic superdelegates, a group that includes members of the Democratic National Committee, governors and past party leaders. The AP survey found that Missouri Rep. Richard Gephardt trails Duka kis with 13 convention votes while Illinois Sen. Paul Simon has 12. Sen. Albert Gore Jr. has 10.55, Jesse Jackson 9.8 and Bruce Babbitt four. But these early commitments largely represent “favorite son” sup port and their significance is far overshadowed by the 278 superdele gates who say they are uncommitted. In all, 76 superdelegates expressed a preference for one candidate or an other. “To be honest, I’m undecided and not particularly happy about it,” said Kathy Farley, a Democratic National * ★★★★★★★★★★it************* * An Evening with Chinese Films! * Sponsored by the Chinese Friendship Association. Elaine Kamarck, who tracks dele gates for Babbitt, and Matt Seyfang, who handles these duties for Ge phardt, believe some party insiders may be reluctant to commit them selves so soon after the campaign burnouts of Sen. Joseph Biden of Del aware and former Sen. Gary Hart of Colorado. Tad Devine, director of delegate selection for Dukakis, predicted that the party regulars would withhold judgment until they see how the can didates do at the polls beginning with the lowa caucuses on Feb. 8. “At some point these things crys tallize,” Ms. Kamarck said. “There’s never been a candidate named ‘Un committed’ elected president.” In addition to the 390 convention votes held by the automatic dele gates, 253 members of Congress are to be selected in April as convention delegates. In all, these superdele gates, holding more than 15 percent of the delegate vote, are an influential voting bloc whose uncommitted sta tus would make them a key force should there be a deadlock among the declared candidates. Most of the remaining 3,517 Demo cratic delegates will be chosen during primary and caucus elections in which they are pledged to support a particular candidate. “This should not be taken as an indictment of the candidates,” said Ms. Kamarck, linking the bloc of uncommitted superdelegates to a similar large undecided category in public opinion polls. “It means that the race is still as unformed in the minds of the party officials as it is in the public at large.” pasta and bountiful salad bar.
