Heather of F.astern Intercollegiate Newspaper Asgoeintion News Editor this issue __ TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1021 JUNE HOVSEPARri These arc indeed times that try men's souls. Undergraduates at Penn State have been silent witnesses this year to a series of regu lations that have gradually but surely eueloached upon the compare% tive freedom that, heretofore, has characterized the social activity of the students of this institution. Each succeeding encrcachment has taken something from the student in tita way of social freedom ane has added fuel to the feeling of indignation toward the attitude of the college authorities Now comes a suggestion, not wholly unexpected, from the Senate Committee on Student Welfare, recommending the abolition of mum heuseparty And with it comes a storm of protest that has swep' through the ranks of the undergraduates 'I his feeling can he de scribed as nothing less than hitter, a feeling that is demanding %adieu' action. Student leaders are being besieged with suggestions the' range from tearing up of campaign pledges to the withdrawal of fra ternity support of college activities Against such sentiment, tit( COLLEGIAN takes a decided stand. But first let the attitude of this newspaper be clearly defined In the past, guided by its ideals of working for the good of the Col lege. it has supported the plans of the administration, opposition tc actions of the college authorities having been the exception in it: editorial columns. With this seine pm pose in mind, the COLLEGIAN now takes issue with the suggestion rt the Senate Committee It is not by radical action, however, that the-June houseparty wif be saved to the undergraduate% Ideas and e‘pressions that involve steps contrary to the Penn State spirit ea , i do nothing but arouse the unalterable opposition of the college authorities Moreover these same radicals forget that the regulation has been merely sug• gested by the Senate Committee, and that it will merit careful con sideration by the Senate before it is enacted Already joint committees ,from Student Council• Interfraterniti. Council and Intro-Mural Council are preparing a protest that will re fate strongly and logically, from an undergraduate point of view the arguments in favor of abelishing the June houseparty Unani mous approval of the suggestions of the student committees cominf from every undergraduate, the leading camper, organizations, :me alumni members et the College, cannot be disregarded ri'y the admin istration the force of campus opinion is s mighty one With the; rebellious and radical element el:militated, it will prove a factor to .he reckoned with in the campaign tar the retention of June houseparty PENN STATE IDEALS "Cow college stuff" is the phraseology populaily attached tc rowdyism of a gross and vulgar nature There iwas a day when col legcs and universities throughout the land went in for that sort of thing, but that day has long since passed And with its passing Penn State has emerged from the "cow colter," class to take het rightful place among the great and dignified institutions of higher learning in the country It has oft been said that when an individual reaches the state or manhood, it is fitting and proper that he put away childish things and assume his true position among men So it is wilt a college Penn State has room no longer for rowdy ism it the type to which the pinase "cow college stuff" may be applied. Ihe past week-end, with its indom athletic events and influx of out-oi-town girls, brought to light several indications that the Nit tany institution might be undergoing a reversion to her childhood interpretations cf gallantry and gentlemanlmess The sport of mak. mg pointed remarks about young ladies who chance to mite' the Ar mory, accompanied with a jeering or their escorts, is no longer a questionable past-tune at Penn State, it is taboo foi all tune Undergraduate sentiment slmuld react against such outward manifestation of ill-breeding and cowardly disrespect for women visitors. It is unfortunate and nearly unbelievable that e pressions of vulgarism and "small town stuff" coming from a few individuals were not greeted with solid reminders that such ungentlemanly con duct is not in ke'eping with Penn State ideals in this respect If the student would but think of the disgusting impression such utterances must leave upon the minds of fail visitors at the college. it is safe to believe that they would never be made. Rut there are unthinking and ill-bred individuals in every community, and the Na nny Valley is no exception. It imams, then, for the more level headed and respectful members of the undergraduate body to take upon themselves the responsibility of Seeing that Penn State stan dards of gentlemanly conduct are observed by all. For "cow college" days are over forever. TIME TO GET IN LINE It is the opinion of certain responsible individuals who have made a comparative study of social conditions in Amei lean colleges ,and uni%ersities that dunking among undergraduates is on the decline. If such is the case, Penn State must be one of the wiceptions. For, despite the action taken by their own governinznt body condemning all illegal tiafficing in alcoholic beverages, students of the Nittany institution continue to drink. The liquor situation at Penn State has never been bad when con sidered from a comparative angle with conditions in this respect ex isting at some other institutions. But there is always a small group of individuals in every college who persist in granting their indul: gences, creating scenes and breaking the law It is unfortunate, in connection with the general decline in drinking, that this group at Penn State gives no evidence of decreasing either in size or in the extent of participation in violations of the Eighteenth Amendment, , One man can do more harm to a fraternity or organization to which lie belongs in one night by getting drunk and creating a scene than n score of-men can do in a semester in the way of building up the organization by conscientious and constructive efforts It is time for the undergraduates at Penn State to come to their senses and swing the Nittany institution in line with the other colleges where drinking is on the decline.
