The Electrical-Mechanical Trip. About thirty-five senior electricals and mechanicals went on the annual inspection trip which occurred dur ing the week before the holidays and included Philadelphia, Trenton, :Camden, Newark, Ampere, and 'New York. The first interesting feature was the State-Penn basketball game on Tuesday .night, which the seniors attended in a body. Part of the . plants were visited by the sections separately, but many establisnments which contained features of general engineering interest were visited by the whole s party. Among - the points of interest in Phila * delphia were the Baldwin Loco motive works, the Christian Street electric light station, and the Western Union Telegraph station. At the latter place they are developing the use of typewriter telegraph machines. The municipal electrical department of Philadelphia was visited, where Mr. McLaughlin, father of E. F. McLaughlin 'O5, is in charge. Here thefirealarm system has been develop ed to awonderful degree. In the plant of the Link Belt company, where belt and spiral conveyors are made, the Taylor system of shop manage _ ment is used. The employees are urged to offer suggestions for im provements, and prizes are given for the best of these. At Camden the plant of the New York Shipbuilding company was in spected, where the new battleship Michigan is being built, as was also that of the R. D. Wood company. Roebling wire mills at Trenton, the Harrison Lamp works at Harrison, and the Crocker-Wheeler electric works at Ampere were visited. One of the most interesting fea tures in New York was the plant of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, where a 24. page paper is printed at the rate of 400 per minute. An interesting point is the use of high po • tential alternating current to remove the frictional static charge on sheets of paper which come from the press.
