A Tall Thing. Capt. Jewel, of EHi cotrille, Cataraugtts county, N. Y., tells a pretty good story of a till Tccrait named Gould, uho recently joined his command as a drummer, lie was six feet in height. His wife and mother-in-law were very much opposed to enlisting. The latter was somewhat of a termagant, and while iu his presence, afforded him little peace of mind. In consequence thereof, Gould concluded to enlist, which he did, and went home to notify hi3 wife and mother-in-law of the fact. His wife received the news in sorrow, but the old lady fired up in an instant. tiVKi vJ - i:,i fi,i jiuusitu, nave )ti &uu itrpucu iTuai have you enlisted for V "For a drummer-boy in Capt. Jewell's company," said Gould. At thi3 the old woman's wrath knew no bounds. "A pretty drummer you would make ! Who d'ye expect would hear you, you fool ? You might answer to drum for angels, but nobody would hear you down here I" About to the Knees. One of our dry goods firms recently procured the ser vices of a clerk who was a green hand at the business. A young lady entered the store one day lately to make some purcha ses, and the other clerks being engaged with customers the young 'ub proceeded to wait on the young lady. Among other things, she inquired for ladies' hose. The boy found the desired articles and present ed them lor the lady s inspection. "How high do they come V she in quired after a short examination. The boy looked somewhat confused, hesitated, but at length stammered out. "AVell I dont know, but I suppose they will come about to the knes3. The young lady did not trade with that clerk any more. A good joke occurred about Con- eressmen the other day. A Michigan Colonel was in command of the guard.- Citizepa '.ere prohibited admittance. Sev eral came up and asked tut corporal to pass them, saying that they were Congress men. The corporal stated the case to the Colonel. "They are Congressmen, are they? asked the Colonel fiercely. "So they eay, sir." "Well, let them pass and go where they please," said the CoKAel, with a fiendish smile ; "let them tramp on torpe does, go into the magazines, and where there is any prospect of their being blown to the devil, for that is the quickest way to end the war. ANNOUNCEMENT OF PARSON BROWNLOW'S BOOK The subscriber is about publishing a nar rative of the perils, adventures, and sufferings of the Rev. A . U. Bkownlow among the secessionists of Tennessee. The manuscript i3 nearly completed, and will be put to press forthwith. The appearance and typography of the work will be of the first class : and it will be fullv and handsomely illustrated with sketches of the scenes referred to and a finely engraved steel portrait of the author. As to its contents, we have no hesitation in savincr that the public will be startled at this narrative of facts. It will lay bare the persecutions and cruelty which marked the development of the secession conspiracy in Tennessee, the disasters and the ruin with which it devested communities once prosper ous and sundered families once happy : more than all, it will expose the bad and reckless ambition, and the relentless bloodthirstincss, by which the ringleaders or tue conspiracy were stimulated to their work of crime ant treason. The narrative is one of personal experiences The author vouches for the accuracy of its statements:. The public may therefore accept it as not only a reliable but a peculiar chap ter in - the general history of the time3 ; and we are confident that no more significant startling, or instructive memorial of the re "lJlion, in its minute personal and social bear ings, is now accessible. 'PI, a ihKII, fim rtu-firp flint Mr Rinii'v tov is a bold speaking man. In this narra tive of his sufferings, composed mostly while confined in the jail at kuoxvill;, he has ut . tcrNl his thoughts in language of extraordi nary forcjf fearlessness, scathing his ad versaries -sn while in their power, ant nrmealinfr to his countrymen even from his. cell with the urgency of a martyr. A CARD. Witmer'b Bridge, Lancaster Tp. July 30, 1860. Messrs. Evans and Watson: Gentlemen The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam R. Barr, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 18o8, has been subjected to a very severe test, which it withstood in a most satisfactory manner. This bale, containing an my oooks together with valuable papers belonging to myself and some to my neighbors and friends, and represeting a value of over Twenty Thous and Dollars, (S20.000) was in my Mill which wa3 destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju ly, 1800, and passed through the fiery ordeal unscathed. Ihe Safe was on the second tloor and fell to the basement-of the Mill, and was subjected for six hours to an intense heat among the ruuis, which was greatly increased by the combustion of a large quantity of grain confined within the brick walla. After the fire the safe was opened and the books and paper3 taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolored. This fact was, however, to many bystanders a better recommendation of your Safes than could be expressed in any other words from me.
