IfYIER, our newly elected Democratic Meyer, will be sworn into office, and assume the duties of his poll. His election is an important eissch in the history of the politics of oar city, for it foreshows a series of democratic successes, in the election of city officers , and is a pleasing proof that nothing is impossible to constancy and persenerence. A few years ago the whig majority in this city was told in hundreds, but it has been gradually and steadily cming down, tin der the well directed efforts of the tireless and in• dcrtnitabla democracy, who now have their rewantl in tbe triumph of one of the most consistent members of their party, • men alike esteemod and req , ected by political friends and foes. In reflecting upon their disgraccfnl defeat, the %%big leaders will remember, that they have brought this' mortification upon themselves. For years, after the choice of Mayor of this city was given to the people, the democrats, deprecating the introduction of p arty I politics into our city affairs, strove to keep out muni cipal elections free from party bittetrress, und to select candidates from the whole people. Tai. course mar approved by the liberal whir, but the more bitter of their leaders, among whom was the late mayor, un posed it, and trusting to the large mewl ity they could command, they made patty nominations, in the bop. of securing the paltry patronage it would give them; and they have practised a course of petty tyranny and proscription of which the discharge of the vra•climen who are suspected of voting against 11UWARD form, rbe crowning, and we hope the final ',el.—The illibe ral „policy of the whigs compelled the detm.crsta to make party nomination., and tie result is the foretion of one of their nominees, by 5 ntnjnin four times as large as that which placed mayor ilow•RD in pm...r. We are not disposed to glory over their vletor); we would merely impress the fact that this has been a lair trial of party strength—that no third pony drew off enough votes to have changed the result, and thin the whig candidate is beaten by the dereoet a , . alone. To conaoln themselves for rite def..at of their 11nyoi, j the whiga lay great stress on the fret that ihey have a -majority in councils, and will of COLIFIe all lily 'Valuable offices in the city with their ne n let This is nothing new nor unexpected, but they ought j to let a sense of justice moderate and conirol their rancor. They will d, on an examination of the re. j Ulm; that large as is du ir majority in council., the, vote on the Whig council ticket throughout the city is scarcely So more than the democratic euttdidstes received. And thereon be no doubt that if it had 1 not been fur the unfair apportionment o f t h e co y, which renders it almost hopeless for the demur-rm. to get a majority in councils, the eggregnre vote fit the democratic councilmen would have bees. as forge a. that of Dr Keen. We me perfectly sore that it there were any thing kik• a lair apportionment or! the city, the democrats would have carried a major,_ tv of the councils. We will take a few moments to show up the rent. I, inequality which prevails in this re.pect. The fine j Common and three Select Councilmen of the Thinl y Ward represent (according to the vote f .r Nlayor) j 824 voters.—The same number of I 'iniorilmen in the' 2d Ward represent 211 voter.!
