The light of : her young life went down As sinks behind the hill The glory of a setting star, . "Clear, suddenly and still. Sweet pmmptings unto kindest deeds Wistoin her very look ; We read her face as one who reads A true and holy book. The measure or a blessed hymn, To whit:hour beans could move ; The hreathing of an inward psalm, A canticle of Iswe. FOR,WHAT IS A MOTHER RESPONSIBLE! A mother is usually also a wife, and has the marrige ment of a' family and a direct influence over those subordinate to her; she has the seat of authority and the sceptre of government. From a position of entfreindersendence she ha. risen to power and rank. and though her throne may be in a cottage, and her dominion the little world of household affair., yet is she not the leas really responsible than is that youthful queen who now sways a sceptre over the four quarters of the earth. But for what is the responsible? She is responsible for the nursing and rearing of her progeny; for theirphysical constitution and growth; their exercise and proper sustenance in early life. A child left to grow up deformed, bloated, or mea gre, is an object of maternal negligence. She is respon•rible for a child's habits; including cleanliness ; order, conversation. eating, sleeping, man ners, and general propriety of behaviour. A child de ficient or untaught in these particulars, will prove a living monument of parental disregard; because, gen crafty speaking, a mother can, if she will, greatly con trol children in these matters. She it responsible for their deportment. She can make them fearful and cringing, she can make them modest or 'impertinent, ingenons or deceitful, mean or manly, elnwnish or polite. The germ of all these things is in childhood, and a mother can repress or bring them forth. She is responsible for the principles which ber chil dren entertain in early life. For her it is to say wheth er those who go forth, from her fireside, shall be im bued with sentiments of virtue, truth, honesty, temper ance, industry, benevolence, and morality, or those of contrary character, vice, fraud, drunkeness, idleness, covetousness. These last will be found to be of the most natural growth ; but on her is devolved the daily, hourly task of weeding her little garden—of eradicating the Minus productions, and planting the human with the lily, the rose and the amaranth, that fadeles flower, emblem of truth. She is to a very considerable extent responsible for the-temper and disposition of her children. Consti tutionally they may be violent, irritably or revengeful; but fur thenegulation or correction of these passions, a mother is responsible. Site is responsible for the intellectual acquirements of her children: that is, she is bound to do what she can fur this oldect. Schools, academies, and col leges operk theiryerusis throughout our. !and; and eve ry moths is siuMr heavy responsibilities to see that her soisestna sieughters have all the benefits which these Arista and which circumstances will permit them to enjoy. . She is responsible for their religions education.— The beginning °fell wisdom is the fear of God; and this every mother must teach. Reverence for God, acquaintance with His word, respect fur the duties and ordinances of religion are within the ability of every parent to implant, and if children grow up igntirant orfttrdleis of the Bible and the Saviour, what moth-. er, whet she considers the wickedness of human heart eippct them to rise up and call her blessed? Mother's Sours. PHYSICAL BEAUTY A late Eng' rub 'work, entitled ''Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation," give* the following fat tenoning fact in physhdogy—not altogether new, but certainly tree according to general observation. "The style of living Is ascertained to have a power ful area in modifying the human figure in the course of go st erations, and this even in its osseous structure. About:Oro bundrod years ago, a number of people wens driven by a barbaremspolicy from the counties of Antrim std Down, in Iceland, toward the seacoast, whets they have ever since been settled, bat in unusu ally miserable circumstances, even for Ireland; anti the cwateqeence is, that they exhibit peculiar features of the most remarkable kind, projecting jaws with large open mouths, depressed noses, high cheek bones, and bow legs, together with an extremely diminutive stature, These, with an abnormal slenderness of the limbs, are the outward marks of a low and barbarous . . . „ . . ...... • ~.. - '-';'......-,:,, • : .',- '' • '!--: - - 4 .„; - • • -.' ---- -..--- :- .- -'` : •;- - -' - 'o2re - il.k;:•• - -'''---- -, '- • :.-- ,• , - 'l.Pr. -,- ---- - - -- - '- • ~ •,:,: i----, ,-.,,• •. _ -,.., ~' *,,,,• -- -., • ~--,:.,:----- .. --,- 1 .;., -.. • ': ~,,..,'. . • - -, • -• .4..,: ":7::,-,•:-. On the other Hand, the beau. ty of the higher ranks in England is very remarkable, being, in the main, as clearly a result of good external conditions. "Coarse, unwholesome, and ill-prepared food," says Buffos, "makes the human race degenerate. All those people who live miserably, are ugly and ill made. Even in France, the country people are not so beautiful as those who live in towns; and I have often remarked, that in those villages where the peo ple are richer and better fed than in others, the men are likewise more handsome, and have better counte nances." He might have added that elegant and commtxli ous dwellings, cleanly habits, comfortable clothing, and being exposed to the open air only as much as health requires, co-opertite with foul in increasing the elegance of the race of human beings. A Duel in Germany.—At a late University cele bration in Germany, a young lawyer, somewhat over come with wine, made some remark disrespectful in regard to the King of Prussia. An officer in the ser vice of the king took it up, and a duel ensued. Uprin the ground the lawyer retracted the remark, and re ceived three shots from his adversary, each time throw ing away his own fire. Upon the fourth fire, the civi lian received a mortal wound, but he had strength enough left to approach his adversary and exclaim:— "I congratulate you; you will be made a captain."— The circumstances of the affair came to the ears of the king. He very properly had the assassin degra ded from his rank, and by society the fellow wua at once sent to Coventry. The most characteristic fea ture of the transaction is the advice• given by the Ger man newspapers, that the scoundrel had better blow his brains out upon the tomb of his victim.
