AFRICAN EXQISITES The general reader has doubtless but little ides of the length to which our negro or servile population carry social distinctions. They have their circlei, their classes and their castes—their exclusives and their non-exclusives: each revolving within its .owe sphere, and ell jealously tenacious of any obstrnsion within its orbit on the part of any of the others. The boundaries between them are so wide that the instan-= ces ate few in which they are over-stepped; and should one of them hava the temerity to ascend gome, lower to a higher circle, he is immediately "cut" by all "hands," unless he bad previous'y paved the way for his due introduction. In this respect, the artiste erotic clubs of London are not more conservative of their exclusive identity. In an altercation between two negroes, to which we once listened, we heard one of them remark to the other: "Now you go wa3, nigger! You's not on an elewis, don ob society wid dis child. My mama's a cottatia buyer: your's is nuffin more dan a common dmymart - ." It is well known that the negros of many of our citizens who do not themselves keep house, are board. ed by their owners, in several of the hotels, their table being the llama as that of the colored servants of the establishment:—"How is you, Jake?" said one of these, the other day, to a brother darkey, who, like himself, "boarded out." "Wal, Brutus," said Jake, "I feels an indelicacy 'bout bein imperlite: but I does n't think it 'comes you to ask me do question. I boards at de Exchange, and does not stop at the resterat. I hem as doet, should know dere place." But one of the greatest stretches of African arises• cracy "on record," is that, perhaps, to which we lie tened yesterday. Two negros met nearly opposite the St Charles, who, it appeared, had been spending the summer North—that is, they travelled with their respective masters. "Why, Sampson, bow is-yaul 4 said one. "Well, is well, thank you, said the other. "You's been to the North, has I'm?" said Jefer' son. "I's just cum'd home," saittAmption. "Aint the free niggers mighty mean 7" said Jeffer son. "Ob course dey is," said Sampson,g . 'but des comes ob dere habin' no roasters." "Ce'rainly," said Jefferson, "dey's loborin' under de abolition of intelligence. But whar did you stop when you was North, Stamp?" "Why, fac' is. Jef," said Sampson, "I spent most ob my time at de Wirginny Springs." "You did, did your said Jefferson. "Wel, I reckons I did," said Sampson. "Den you is'ot ciety for dis nigger," said Jefferson. "Ps been 'mong the reclusives, at Saratoga myself.— We dance de Polka dere: I reckons Wirginny bretk downs can't shine. Good by, nigga! But look be., when ybu meets a color'd gem man wat drank de Congress water, you passes him by wid silent dispect —dues all." And saying this Jefferson's round eye dilated and his thick lip swelled at the idea of being accosted and conversed with in the public street by a negro who had never mixed in more fashionable sod , ety thashe considered he must have met with at the Virginia Springs, who had never drank Congress wa ter, and who was utterly ignorant of the Polka! SE-QUO-YA-OR GEORGE GUESS The editor of the Cherokee Advocate gives thelid lowing interesting account of Se-Quo-Ytt, the distin guished man of that nation, who invented the alpha bet of the Chetokee language: After spending much time and labor in attempts to mature his system of arithmetic, in which he mu some progress, Se-Quo-Ye eventually eve it up * le impracticable; but adhered to his habits of industry, observation and reflection. In the public affairs of his nation, generally, Se•Quo.Ya never performed an an ti vs part, although constantly alive to the happiness and prosperity of his people—of this fact and of his strong attachment to his country, he gave the sterigest evidence, in 1839, in his efforts to re-unite into one body, the Eastern and Western Cherokees, and to se cure for their Government the adoption of their exist ing Constitution. He was President on the part of the Western Cherokees, when the Cherokees met in Convention to effect the first of these highly impor tant measures, and was one of the framers and sign ers of the other. - - . The Council of the nation, out of respect for his character, and in consideration of his great invention, have allowed him, for many years, an annual pension. At thelast session of the Council this pension was in creased to three Lundred dollars, to be paid yearly to him during his-natural life, and afterwards to his wife in case she shall survive him. But what has become of this remarkable man, whose native genius has struck light from darkness—eonfer red inconceivable blessings upon his people, and achiev ed for his own fame an enviable distinction among those few truly great names, with which ate connected imperishable honor? Is 110 still alive? Or does his venerable head repose beneath skome unknown clod of the Grand Prairie'? These are questions that we can not now satisfactorily answer. In the summer of 1842, influenced perhaps by a de. sire to explore the Western Prairies, end become as inted with his Red bretheren, who roam them free and untrammelled, Se Quo Ya, having loaded several pack horses with goods, visited, in company with a number of Cherokees, the Cammanchee Indians.— After remaining with them some time, he made his way with a son and two or three other Cherokees, into Northern Mexico, towards Chi-hau-hau, and engaged awhile in teaching the Mexicans his native language. Since then, reports concerning him have reached his friends in this country. That which seems to be the most probable, when the hardships to which, in his wanderings, he has necessarily been exposed, are re membered, in addition to his decrepid form and the weight of many years, is, that this truly great man, full of years and of honors, sleeps the sleep of death, , in some wild and unknown spot, far from his wife, his country, and his people. HOW TO RAISE GOOD APPLES. No branch of rural industry is more neglected than the cultivation of good fruit, and none will pay the farmer a higher profit for the labor bestowed. We shall rejoice if the following remarks from Mr R L Pell, of Ulster county, Ni Y who recently ,eeeived gold medal from the American Institute, for the best Fruit Farm, shall aid any of our country friends to improve their orchards: To the Committee on Fruit Farms: Gentlemen—Being desirous to compete for the pre mium to be awarded by the American Institute ett3ts Sixteenth. Annual Fair, for thebest Fruit Farm la the Statei I now abide its rules, and offer, at the revels of Mr T B NV its worthy and very useful Secretary, my mode of managing. For some years I have been experimenting upon the apple tree; having an orchard of 20,000 Newton pip pin apple trees; I have found it very unprofitable to wait for what is termed the bearing year, and cons& quently it has been my study to assist nature, so as to enable the tree to bear every year. I have noticed that it bears more profusely than any other tree, and consequently requires the intermediate year to recover itself, by extracting from the atmospben4 and earth the requisites to enable it to produce. If unassisted by art, the' intervening year must necessarily be lost. If, bowover, it is supplied with the proper &anemias, it will bear every year. Three years ago in April.
