Tina it is that the strike has been effectually ended, and the coal beta are again being worked with redoubled vigor. Under these oiraumstances, when coal is mined at the present rate, could not the companies reduce the prices a little ? They would realize a reasonable amount of profit even if the prices were lowered three or four cents on the bushel, and moreover, the public would be immensely grateful to them for their generosity. Seven cents on the bushel' is profit enough, at least so the publlz Is !Ilium! to think, so that if coal would be soil at four teen or fifteen cents per bushel instead of twen ty, the community would have another reason for supporting the companies In case another difficulty should arise between them and their employees. There is also another reason why the price of coal should be reduced, though ap parently some people do not regard it in the right light. The mining companies state that it would be next to impossible for them to reduce the prices under existing circumstances, as the demand for coal has been c msiderably reduced of late in consequence of the markets being overstocked in sane places, and the trade CAU• not be carded oa extensively enou3ll to realize a considerable margin of profit in c see they were to inaugurate a miecl on in the prices. Now this reasoning la Inclining ton mu h on one side to be reasonable. The prier of any com modity le raised or lowered la proportion to the supply in the market, and, In our opinion, Coll should not form a.: exception In this general rule, even if the entire in mop oly of It be placed in the hands of a few mining companies. If the supply Is greater than the demand, we should immediately require that the prices be reduced. rho la the true light In which this akir should' be regarde., mad this Is the light in Which the people will always regard it, unless the mining companies show them some, reason why they should do otheiwise. James IL Hopkins esq., addressed the meet ing at great length, expounding fully, in his characteristic style, the great principles in volt-- ed in the present contest, upon which Wee de pendthedownfallor preservsti in of the Ameri can Union. Those who have beard Mr. Hopkins on former occasions have pronounced him tashc One of the ablest orators in Western Pennsyl vania. The next Speaker who took the stand was tha gallant and meritorious B. S wet tzer, who was greeted by the audience wlth three rousing cheers and a tiger. Col. T. H. (lon and the laws, THE Democratic Meet's:we—A stirring and ffirgely - tritended meeting was hell by the De mocracy last evening on Fifth street. Several speakers addressed the meeting at length, and their speiiihes elicited the applause of the audi ence. We are here called upon to register an occurrence which is ad example of the most shameless effrontery on the one hand and the moat laudable forbeataineenn the other.' Duri ng the meeting a gentleman of Republican princi ples whose name, for worthy motives, we re frain from- publishing, interiu s pted the speaker several times with his remarks, and told the speaker that he would represent things in an entirely different light if he were permitted to address the audience. He was accordingly in , vited in do so, when he commenced pouring forth the most Vile abuse againsk ,the chairman of the meeting and the gentleman he interior).- ed. Seeing that his abuse had no effect upon the audience, he did MS Utmost to excite them, and terminated his address (l) with three cheers for Lincoln. Pending these effronteries the au dience conducted itself with the utmost deco rum, deeming, perhaps:that his oWn conselenCe would be a sufficient reproach for his conduct . Let this example speak for itself. Arrested for. Larceny.-.A lad named Long was yesterday arrested for stealing pig iron and scrap-iron from the Monongahela wharf.
