AIR BENEFIT OF THE ORPHANS A.t Convert Hall, EVERY EVENING, commencing MONDAY LOCAL INTELLIGENCE Thk Fost Wavne Railroad Difficul tt. —There would seem to be some hopes Ithat the difficulties thrown in the way of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad Company erecting a new pier on Daqaesne Way, were about to be removed. At the meeting of Councils on Monday evening a communication from Qeo. W. Cass, President of the road, relative to the use of a portion of Duqueane Way for the erection of a pier, was read ia Select Council and accepted. The communica tion states that the erection of the pier is necessary to the security of the bridge of the Company over the river, as well as to the increasing business of the city. Thp Company ask for a condemnation of a portion of the wharf, and request an early consideration of their application. The same communication was read in Common Council, where a resolution was adopted appointing a special committee of five two from Select and three from Common Council —to inquire into the matter. In Select Council the resolution was non concurred in, and a resolution wap adopt ed appointing a special committee of five to confer with the railway company on the subject and agree upon some terms, the committee to report at the next meet ing. Messrs. Brown and Thompson were appointed on behalf of Select Council. Messrs. McCandless, Roberts and Holmes were appointed on behalf of Common Conncil. We trust that the Councils and Railroad Company will come to a mutual agreement on the subject-, so that the r ier may be finished, and the contempla'ed improvements proceeded with promptly. 15 l entil 10 Cents I)r. The communication was ac eepted, and referred to the street com mittee. What -will the “ fancy 'do in Pitts burgh ?_ Will they take pattern from their New York brethren, or will they give up their bets ? Chicago For Market.— The Chicago Times oi the says: There is a fair business doing and prices have not met with any decided chaDge except for Mink, which are lower. Request.— Will someone connected with the Pennsylvania Hospital spend a few dollars in making passable the footpath and rood from Peno street to the gate of that institution. Its present condition is simply disgraceful, and whether the duty belongs to the United States officers or those who havean interest in the property it matters little. Many ladies ana gentle men visit the Hospital who do not own carriages who mußt wade through mnd to reach the grounds. Will Dr. Ray, or the chief surgeon, attend to this simple and very polite invitation. Wanted— The Pittsburgh and Cleveland R. k. desire the nse ofthe bed of the old ca nal across Penn street, to reach property re cently purchased to be used for depot pur poses. We see no objection to this ex cept that it will forever prevent the re duction of the annoying elevation at the Caual Bridge, At this point the street should be level, ae it would assist materi ally in clearing the gorge which daily oc carß xn that over crowded portion of the city. Swallowing A Township.— Our Gov ernment land costs one dollar an acre on an average, and champagne two dollars a bottle. Many a man dies landless who during his life has swallowed a fertile township, trees and all. So a young man who smokes cigars and tobacco to the amount of one dollar a week, wastes a farm of fifty acres each year, which, in a short time wonld be worth a thousand by its mere rise in value. Think of these things, ye tiplere and topers. FOR THE FIFTH STREET. —Many of the A Grand Success.— The receipts of the Cincinnati Sanitary Fair average more than $9,000 daily. The receipts up to Monday morning were nearly $86,000, | Exhibition. —An exhibition by the L pupile of the Excelsior School, West Pitta . burgh District, was given on the 24th of : December. The exercises were select declamations, dialogues, with tableaux, ~ *ocal and instrumental music. Before the i hour for commencing the exercises had . arrived, the school-room was filled by i of the most intelligent audiences ever assembled in the building. The pupils were marched upon the stage tastefully 1 arrayed in while, which had a most beam - t.iiul effect, in contract with the green : foliage of the trees, represented in the scenery by which they w a re surrounded. The members o f the Board, members of the Council, and other distinguished visi tors, occupied seats on either side. The Principal, County Superintendent, choir and the pupils occupied the platform. The effect of the whole arrangement was strikingly beautiful, the performances very good and well received —some of the performers being interrupted again and again, by applause. The vocal music was by Mrs. Smith and the Messrs, and Misses McGraw; the music on the piano, by Miss Jennie McGraw. This feature seemed to give great satisfaction to the audience. In addressing the pupils to be rewarded the Principal appropriately considered the propriety of giving public testimonials. After distributing the Honors, a beautiful present accompanied with an appropriate addri-sa, was given to Mr. Stepheusou who, replied with some excellent remarks; and the exercises closed with an eloquent appeal for the cause of education by the County Superintendent, and the singing of the Red, and Blue. The piano used for the occasion which gave such per feet satisfaction, was kindly furnished by Seidle k Bro., Smithfield street.
